Bladder cancer as well

User

I'm just getting used to dealing with my prostate cancer when something else crops up. You will see from the update of my profile that I had blood in my urine on 9th December and a cystoscopy on 23rd December confirmed bladder cancer. So now I have to deal with a forthcoming operation to resection my bladder which will also give me the staging and grading of my bladder cancer. I was expecting to start radiotherapy on my prostate soon but I don't know now what is going to happen. If the bladder cancer turns out to be invasive the treatment is either surgery or radiotherapy. Surgery would involve removal of the bladder and creation of a urostomy but I'm not sure that they would do that because of my heart failure. So it might end up being radiotherapy. I wonder if I could have radiotherapy 2 for the price of 1 (prostate and bladder)!!! It's not always easy.

Hello Benjo, not such a jolly Christmas/New Year for you then.

You're right, life isn't always easy but for some people, it's a real pain in the wotsit isn't it.

When is the re-section, have they booked it yet?

Good luck and I hope it all goes well for you, with both cancers.

Best Wishes

Sandra

Hi Benjo,

What rotten luck to now have bladder cancer too. Treatment options may well be restricted by your heart condition and possibly where and to what degree the bladder is affected. Your case requires careful consideration by specialists and I hope a way forward is found that works for you.

Hi Benjo

Sorry to hear of the latest problem, did they say whether it was Badder cancer or Prostate cancer that has invaded the bladder.

Hi Benjo

That's very bad luck indeed. I do have a friend who has Pca and bladder cancer and lives in Oz. He goes in every couple of months for a bladder biopsy, if there are tumours they give intravenous chemo direct to the bladder and so far it's been working well.

Good luck with the treatment plan for your version of it.

Kindest regards

Allison

Hi Benjo,

As you said, just when you get your head around the prostate cancer, then you get hit with this? Not that it will help anything, but there are others out here dealing with more than one type of cancer at a time. No other way than take each issue in turn and aggressively participate in your own treatment decisions. Absolutely all the best to you!

Lawrence

Hi All

Thanks to all of you for your good wishes and advice.

Alison - yes if it is a superficial tumour it is followed up every few months for biopsy and further resection. I believe if it recurs too frequently or if it becomes invasive they advise to take out the bladder and create a urostomy. I'll just have to wait and see what happens when I have the first resection and biopsy - no date fixed yet.

Roy - the urologist said it was a separate cluster of tumours and not connected to the prostate. In fact I was able to see them on screen from the cystoscope.

Barry - as far as my heart condition is concerned I have been going to the heart failure clinic since before Christmas because my pacemaker set off an alarm at the hospital computer to alert them that my fluid status had risen too high (my pacemaker transmits direct to the hospital from a machine at the side of my bed). In fact I have been to the clinic this morning and we have managed to get my kidney function up to a reasonable level so I hope when I see the anaesthetist on Wednesday he will liaise with my cardiologist as well as the urology team and work out the best course of action.

Thank you all so much for your support.

Best wishes

Michael

Just an update on my bladder cancer. Had bladder resection on 11th February. Biopsy results yesterday confirmed that I have advanced bladder cancer - T3/G3. My prostate cancer is doing well with the hormone therapy but the bladder cancer has taken over my concerns. My urologist says they are completely separate tumours. Radical cystectomy is not an option for me because it is a major operation (7 to 8 hours) involving the formation of a stoma and it would be very risky with my heart failure. So oncologist is to arrange I/V chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. When it comes to the radiotherapy they say that they will zap my prostate as well so it will be two for the price of one!! This wasn't the result I was expecting but we will deal with it day by day.

Best wish's to all

Michael

Just caught up with this thread and your story,

Really bad luck but you have a good attitude and that helps.

Glad to see that you are getting treatment and I hope it works out for you. Like the idea of 2 for 1 for your issues.
