hi,just been to the toilet and there is bright red blood in my urine, any help please.

It might be a bit of radiation damage, or an infection. Best to get in to see the GP tomorrow, or phone the nurse specialist at Jimmy's (good luck with whether she calls you back though :-( )

Hello Radar,

I had similar problems earlier this year. Not just a one off though. When the blood comes during the flow may be relevant. I had a cystoscopy as part of the investigation, along with an ultrasound on my kidneys.

The cystoscopy wasn't something I would happily queue up for again, but wasn't as bad as I feared. The cystoscope is designed to do a job and the procedure took between 5 and 10 minutes.

My urologist put me on Dutasteride which cleared the bleeding in about two weeks. I continued to take it for 3 months with no further bleeding.

The urologist wasn't clear what it was, although he could see some radiation scarring.

Hope this helps.

Pierre

R

In the right hands the cystoscopy will be totally painless and in the wrong hands slightly uncomfortable, I have had about 4 in the last couple of years.

For totally different reasons to yours I had bright red blood dripping from my penis follwed by a big clot, it certainly gets your attention.

Hope all goes well.

Thanks Chris

Hi,

Try not to worry too much. I had the same thing happen to me earlier this year. I was sent for a cystoscopy as they found the bleeding wasn't caused by an infection.

The cystoscopy was not as bad as I imagined. Nothing was found and in the end they decided that the bleeding was probably a late effect of radiotherapy I had 18 months before.

Hopefully, your bleeding may be the same thing.

Steve

My Oh had the same this year too.

It was an after effect of RT albeit 3 years later.

Best to get it checked out though for peace of mind.

My cystoscopies were all over in a matter of minutes and my kidney scan a couple of weeks a go was no more than 15 minutes.

Hope all goes well.

Radar, Worst case scenario is bladder cancer. I've been through that and three years after radical cystectomy, I'm fine. There are lots of treatment options before you get to that, though. Urologist will probably take a sample of anything odd that he sees in the bladder or urethra. You will of course get anxious awaitng the biopsy results, but rest assured, if it does come to this worst option eventually, life goes on! Naturally we all hope the radiation hasn't done anything nastier than weaken some blood vessels. That is most likely the case.
Good Luck.

Going thru this right now with husband 2 years after RP then radiotherapy as part of a clinical trial - he had 'positive margin' in one spot on the prostate - PSA undetectable about 6 weeks ago as it has been for ages - then this! He had blood in urine once about 12 days ago, saw GP straight away, no sign of infection on dipstick and no other symptoms that would suggest infection - so off to hospital - seen at clinic, bloods done and now had CT scan - trying to avoid going straight to cystoscopy - and for about a week during all that - no recurrence of the blood. Began to breathe. Then couple of days ago is appeared again, intermittently, and tonight worst ever. SO while we are trying not to panic - it is jolly hard not to worry..
Don't know whether to let consultant know it is recurring to help him with as much info as possible, or just wait and see. I wonder if he should also have a renal ultrasound but that hasn't been mentioned yet by consultant though one of the nurses said they might ask for it in these circumstances. He is well, no other symptoms except for an intermittent pain below rib which he thinks is an old sporting injury but .. I am thinking might be kidney.. also - he is more likely to have blood after physical exertion I think. Aaargh. Sorry just sounding off a bit here..

further update - tiny tumour found when they did cystoscopy - not the news we wanted but relieved found so early if it is cancer - awaiting path results now but they gave us a pretty clear message that it is less likely to be benign - also seem to think a new thing not prostate mets - atho it feels odd to say it a new early low grade cancer is probably a better scenario. Waiting.

But the moral of this is - don't ignore blood in urine - they told us - even if is ONE time - get it checked.
