Flying after chemotherapy

User

Hi,

Any advice/experience with regards to traveling after chemotherapy? Dad's last session was around 6 weeks ago, we are looking to fly to the Canary Islands for 1 week before his follow up appointment.

We have rang up many companies and explained dad's situation but they either won't insure him or its looking around £1500+

It seems as though one of the main issues are because it is a newly diagnosis? (June 2016?)

Thank you

Hannah.

There is quite a useful fact sheet in the toolbox on travel if you can find it. I'm on my phone so not easy to find and link it I'm afraid.
Biggest concern is infection and you might want to ask his GP to prescribe some antibiotics 'just in case' so you can nip any infection in the bud.
As you are traveling within the EU make sure you have your EHIC card up to date. You can buy insurance which excludes cover for a known illness but I think I'd be reluctant in this case as they could try and tie a lot of things back to a weakened immune system.
I hope you find some affordable insurance and manage to get a well deserved break.

Hi my OH had chemo last year and we flew approx 4 months after last session ,we didn't risk it before mainly due to him maybe getting an infection ,ours was a short flight to Italy then on a cruise so we knew if anything happened we could get medical help quickly .it was great to just sit back and relax after the treatment .
We're insured with nationwide flex plus that charges £10 a month for various other things. I phoned and explained situation and they upgraded insurance for £120 extra per year for worldwide travel .
Maybe you could postpone the holiday for a couple of months just to be on the safe side ?
Best wishes

Try insurewith - they are one of a number of companies who specialise in covering people with medical conditions. Macmillan and Cancer Research UK both have sections on their websites listing companies who specialise in covering people with cancer.

I get free European travel insurance for me and Mrs_C via our Nationwide flex account. I have to pay a premium for my pre-existing medical conditions. These are high BP and advanced prostate cancer, remember I'm onto chemo now. The cost for one year for the two of us, £129.60.

A bargain in my opinion.

The man on the phone has made a generalisation without basis. Anyone can get insurance for anything if they are willing to pay the premium.

We have already given you lots of suggestions; your dad needs to work through the list to see who offers the best deal. Don't be tempted to have the cancer excluded though.
