So my dad has been diagnosed with advanced prostrate cancer and secondary bone cancer a few weeks ago! Today he went for a soft tissue scan and later he started to feel quite ill with pain. The doctor thinks he has a urinary track infection and has prescribed antibiotics. Having asked him today when his next appointment was with his oncology nurse he said he hadn't been given one. Can anyone please give me any advice on what is likely to happen now, obviously we would like him to start the hormone treatment as soon as possible but at the moment the waiting around is really starting to get him down!

Sorry to hear that your dad has advanced prostate cancer. Has he had other scans or biopsies to get the initial diagnosis? Like you I would be very keen to start treatment as soon as possible but I know they will probably want to do all the scans needed and review the results to decide on the best treatment pathway for your dad first. It would certainly be worth contacting his cancer nurse to find out what stage they are at in deciding his treatment. I would certainly be doing that in the first instance. I hope you get things moving as soon as possible. Best wishes, Ian.

Hi Cmacinnes, there is something not right about this - your dad should already be on the hormones. Usually, as soon as they know the cancer is advanced they start hormone treatment regardless of any further scans planned. If it was my dad I would be on the phone to the nurse specialist, the onco's secretary or the GP (or all three) first thing tomorrow morning.

Have you seen a written version of the diagnosis? The GP should have received a letter from the onco and this is often copied to the patient. Check whether the diagnosis was indeed adenocarcinoma, which is the most common type of prostate cancer. If there is no diagnosis letter ask the nurse specialist to confirm. Note though that they can only tell which type of prostate cancer it is if he has had a biopsy.
