Very worried 40 year old

Hi, very worried at the moment as I wait on the results of an MRI with contrast. After one incidence of blood in the semen a couple of months ago I had two PSA tests done about 6 weeks apart which scored 7.1 and 6.9. No other real symptoms except I was feeling ill with flu like symptoms when I noticed blood in my semen. Had a cystoscopy (very unpleasant) and ultrasound of bladder/kidneys which were all clear and fine. Also had DRE which consultant said felt fine. Just reading threads on here and very worried about what MRI will show. Due to have biopsy once MRI results are known. Otherwise very fit and relatively young - I don’t drink or smoke and am pretty active. I do weightlifting and drink about a pint and a bit of skimmed milk a day and read that there’s a strong link between dairy and prostate cancer so concerned about that as well. Feels a bit unreal to be writing about this at my age but can’t help feeling I’m facing this reality.

Thanks all,

Andy

Hello Andy and welcome to the site.

I bet you do feel unreal, especially at 40 years of age. It's an old man's disease right?

Whilst that is true a lot of the time (you have probably been told that more men die with it than of it because it is only found out later after  they die of something else? ) it does sometimes happen that younger men are diagnosed.

High PSA can be caused by a couple of things other than Prostate cancer. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia for one (BPH) as well as infection. The fact that the consultant said the DRE felt fine is encouraging.

Have you been checked for infection? (Which might go with the flu like symptoms wheen you noticed the blood)

Anyway, try not to forward think this too much. IF you do have PC, IF IF IF, then you are already ahead of the game in that you are under a consultant and will be dealt with swiftly.

Don't fret too much at this stage about the skimmed milk, in fact I wouldn't at this stage change anything dietary since it may well not be cancer at all. Time enough to sort those things out if a positive diagnosis is made.

You are young, fit and otherwise healthy so hopefully better placed than a lot of men who are diagnosed.

Please come back and share the results and I'm sure you'll get help in abundance

Best Wishes

Sandra

Andy

I had my prostate removed a year ago on 9th December. I was 46. I do hope there is another explanation to the blood in the semen and the PSA result. My PSA was 6.2 and, even though I'm young, I had pretty significant cancer. I know you are worried but the best thing is to go for the scans etc and rule it out or, if you have to, decide on a treatment pathway.

The specialist nurses from this site are absolutely brilliant to talk to.

Thanks Sandra/Ulsterman for your prompt replies. I’m very sorry to hear about your situation Ulsterman and I guess that’s the sort of outcome I’m fearing. Sandra, they did run urine tests and a cystoscopy and ultrasound but couldn’t see any urinary infection. I did phone the nurse helpline here who said infections can stay in the system for months. I have been very prone to bugs and flu like symptoms the past couple of years but have put that down to a hectic lifestyle and being run down, as well as being a terrible sleeper. Not sure if any of that is relevant but it gets the mind thinking.

Thanks again both and I’ll keep you posted
