Passing blood through the catheter

I had my prostate removed a week ago, and today my leg bag has been filling up with blood and urine, clearing up then starting again. Any idea what could be causing this.

Have you been doing any activity that might have upset it or been to the loo and strained.  I used to find sitting on the loo tugged the pipe and could give a bit of blood.  I had occasional blood almost up to the day they removed the pipe.  When they removed the catheter I didn't have blood again as far as I could tell.

I think it’s normal to have some blood in the bag following an operation, although I only did for around two days. What came as a surprise was passing brown blood and clots for a short while after three weeks, but I was assured that was OK too.

There is another thread here this week entitled Extended-haematuria which discusses the same subject.

Starday

I was told if the urine looks like Rosé wine it "should" be okay, if it is like red wine get it checked out. Blood in urine often looks worse than it is. Two weeks post RARP I still was getting blood in my bag. I now have a permanent Suprapubic catheter and some times get blood even though my last minor surgery was months ago.

Do you have an out of hours urology contact number or you could possibly ring the ward you were discharged from or even your district nurse. I was given strict instructions not to let anyone change the catheter post op. If  in doubt get it checked by your medical team.

Thanks Chris

Thanks everyone for your rapid respons, I had been neither straining or doing an activity, it also looks more like a browny red ( which makes me think it might be a scab in the bladder dissolving). Tried for over an hour to get in touch with the ward no answer, so I am going to phone a specialist nurse with prostate cancer uk and see what they say.

Hi Starday I had my catheter for two weeks and had various on off days of blood and scabs in the bag first time was a shock to me found drinking gallons of water flushed it thru thou also spoke to my specialist nurse for some advice and she was very helpful just be mindful you have had a serious op and time is a great healer all the best

I had a bloody overnight catheter bag 10 days after my operation. I went in and saw the duty urologist who assured me it was a scab or a small clot breaking away and was expected around the time it happened. She assured me everything seemed normal.

I was due to get the catheter removed the next day and all that went to plan. If in doubt though get it checked out.
