process of diagnosis

I have just joined here, I am on the long path of diagnosis of high PSA tests

I am 66,

in Aug 2016 i had a PSA test and DRE test

slight enlargement , but soft not hard

PSA test came back at 5.2

had a early appointment with urologist , due to a cancellation, who carried out another DRE

and we agreed to watch and wait for 6mths

6 mts arrived in Feb 2017 had another psa test and this time it showed 8.0

we are now looking at history of symtoms and biopies

week later had a ultra sound scan and urine flow test

and now waiting for next appoint 27th mar 2017 to discuss further with urologist and biopies

Urologist does not seem overly concerned although I am scaried to hell

All this waiting seems to drive you mad with concern and worry, It's the not knowing that does it,

Am I worrying unnecessary?

Anyone else in similar situation?

Hi David,

Sorry your situation brings you to the forum. Unfortunately, the process of tests and diagnosis in the NHS is often a slow one. It may depend on the hospital you are attending, their waiting list and how much priority is being given to your case. Hopefully they consider you are not an urgent case.

biopsies taken this morning

10 (5 each side )

just a little sore otherwise fine

urologists said my prostate is very large which is likely why PSA is high

5-10 working days wait for results, (fingers crossed)

then either meeting with pathway team or urologist to see which way we go

Looking promising

just received a text appointment for meeting with urologist, 22nd May, 6 weeks away

no results as such, hmmm, but when he took the biopsies he said if cancerous results would be via pathway team, if benign then appointment would be with him

As appointment is with him , then i have to assume good news, benign.

I think a visit to receptionist is called for to see if i can get the results confirmed

will update

FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS MY LAST PSA RESULT WAS 8.0

that does sound positive, Hopefully you can get confirmation from GP as you suggest.

I'd stick to the positive route too.

Why not ring the urologist's secretary for the result?

I went to see her this afternoon, she said the results where there , but she could not make head nor tail of them

BUT as urologist has asked to see me and NOT the hospital it looks like it is benign and he will treat it

fingers crossed

Since my visit she has been able to bring my appointment forward to 3rd May which is better

All appointments are done by text with written confirmation, maybe I will have more details in the letter when it arrives in the next couple of days

So 3rd May arrives and appointment with uro at 8.00am,
10 out of 10 samples are confirmed as benign, prostate size is confirmed as 68 gms, Explained possible sampling error , uro not too concerned about PSA of 8.0
So now on 6 mths wait and then retest PSA, to see if any rise

Worth a read for the future. My brother psa values were up and down . See my profile. So much more difficult to see psa trends.

His psa had been to 18.
Obviously don't want unnessary biopsies. .

6 month PSA test next week wednesday 25th Oct 2017,

see urologist on 20 th nov, when back from holiday, for the results

and for hopefully sign off back to GP

will up date

follow up appointment with urologist this morning

PSA results 7.2 a drop from 8.0

programmed in for PSA retest in 6 mths

although it is down slightly, uro is not concerned due to my BPH

he has suggested regular PSA tests, and if it starts to rise he will want to see me again

he suggested that he would not be concerned until PSA reaches 15
