Does anyone know if you can travel in Europe with only Europe health insurance card while having chemotherapy or if you have just finished your cycle of chemotherapy. And what would be covered as regards medical treatment

Hello Rose,
I'm glad you are both (?) contemplating a holiday.

I'm not sure of the answer to be honest as we haven't had chemo. You could try putting your details into one of the comparison sites (Compare the market etc) be honest with the questions asked and see what comes up. It's what I doi for our travel insurance but then I have John's age to take into account as well as his cancer

Your EHIC card will cover you for free or nominal fee emergency treatment in state hospitals throughout the EU, regardless of whether you are undergoing chemo or anything else. But of course will not cover you for emergency repatriation if anything very serious occurs.

There are insurers that specialise in medical problem insurance. I think someone recommended one on the Macmillan cancer site. I think Staysure is one of those.

I was fortunate enough to attend the demystifying chemotherapy workshop run by Macmillan at my local hospital today. The question of the European health card came up and it only covers you should you need emergency treatment only at a state hospital and should an emergency arise the ambulance team will take you to the nearest hospital not necessarily the state hospital. Hope that helps.
