Hi Sadie

I'm sorry, my apologies please for my previous silly comment.

All I was trying to make some people smile that's all.

But your right when you name a club on here that comment can be classified as a commercial advert not a comment. .

I wont do that again.promise.

And thanks for kind words by the way you did not hurt my feelings at all.

Hello all, and apologies for my delay in posting here, for various reasons life has been a little busy of late.

I'm thinking of a social get together - nothing too formal or organised - but just a chance to meet up with old friends and get to know new ones. Anyone able to attend will be made very welcome, and I know from previous events how valuable the social side of meeting up with each other can be - and how many good friendships have been made over the years.

I know it is impossible to find a venue and date to suit everyone, but I have chosen Saturday 6th July, Northallerton, a lovely market town in Yorkshire. For anyone wanting to make a short (or longer break) there is plenty of local accommodation and the rail and transport links are good.

https://www.yorkshire.com/places/north-yorkshire/herriot-country/northallerton

As the date and venue may well not be suitable for everyone who wants to attend I do think it is an excellent idea for anyone else wanting to do something similar to organise alternative dates/venues. Dave - Newark in June sounds good too. And wouldn't it be lovely if we could have a series of events/meet-ups happening around the country to look forward to?

Once I know how many people we are expecting I will confirm an exact venue. Northallerton has a variety of suitable restaurants, cafes and pubs. And if anyone is feeling energetic there is a Park run in the morning, which I am thinking of doing, and a fellow PCUK volunteer is likely to be handing out PCUK awareness information to all Park run finishers.

Please let me know, either here, by private message or email, if you are wanting to attend.

Thanks, Janet

So it seems Northerners only as per normal lol. Silly thing is I’m from Cheshire but live as South as possible now. Hope you all have a great time though and I’d like to do it , but a bit epic for a day or two !

Hi Chris, apologies it isn't convenient for you, although if you could manage a break away it would be great. I agree driving is a long way but I travel way down south by train regularly and it's not a bad journey. The whole of the Northallerton area is beautiful to explore too.

I admit my main thoughts on venue were to make it as convenient for George as possible. George has put so much time, energy and caused himself so much stress, for so many years, to put the events on for people, it seems only fair to give back, just a little, to him.

I know you mentioned possibly putting something on in Southampton, and I think that would be a great idea for people nearer you. I really think it would be great if we could have regular meets in various areas, giving as many people as possible a chance to meet up if they want to. Many years ago we did have more regular meet-ups in various venues, which worked well.

For many years we also had a December meet-up near Euston Station, which was convenient enough for many people to get to, usually there and back in the day, so that could be another option if anyone wanted to organise?

There are also lots of support groups around which I wonder if everyone is aware of? These also offer a great chance of meeting up and gaining local support.

All the best, Janet

For those in or near Beds, Herts, Bucks, (not far to travel from London, Oxford, Reading, Milton Keynes), see my post yesterday about Prostate Peddlers open day on Saturday 13th April.

Dear Friends,

I think Janet's ideas about regional meet-ups are excellent.

There will be a surprising number of us who would love to travel to such events outside our own areas.

From 2007 till 2017 I organised a June function for us all at The Mill On The Soar near Leicester.

The reason for choosing that venue was because the location was central for our UK members.

Lynn and I travelled 200 miles to get there, and a lot of people travelled much further, from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and even from Australia and Arizona on a few occasions when ex-pats on the PCUK forums were holidaying in the UK.

From there being just 15 of us at The Mil in 2007, the numbers quickly rose to 60 -70 people attending in June every year, all of them members of our onine forum.

And Janet's so right about how great friendships have been formed by PCUK members who met regularly at these get-togethers. Speaking personally, I made more true friends in my 14yrs of this PCa battle than I had made in all the years before diagnosis in 2005.

However, since those heady days, numbers dropped as we guys aged and/or were facing very serious illness.

I'm so glad I got to meet them all.

To comply with Data Protection laws, Janet has asked me to use my mailing list to contact everone who was a regular at The Mill On The Soar rather than her sending out unsolicited emails.

And of course, you can PM Janet on here, or post your interest on this forum topic.

Once I send out the 'Group Email', those who receive it will be able to read a message from Janet giving you a lot more details about the event on Sat July 6th this year.

Keep a lookout for my mail in your inbox.

You can mail me at georgehardy51@msn.com

and I will pass on any queries you may have to Janet.

Stay well my friends,

Looking forward to meeting old friends and new in July.

George

PS.Once people have confirmed they wish to attend, we'll have a regularly updated list of who'll be there.

I'll start that list now:tongue-out

Hi,

We (me in particular) aren't very sociable so won't be attending.

We just returned from a mid-week break staying 3 miles from Northallerton.  I'd second that it's a nice place with some stylish shops.  Thirsk, another nice town but smaller, has an excellent vet attraction which I won't name noting the comment above about advertising.  There are lots of places to visit especially with a car although York isn't too far for rail travellers.  There's a 5 star museum in Barnard Castle and one at Shildon that don't get the publicity they deserve. Masham, Ripon, Fountains, Eden and Elvington deserve mention too.  Peter

Hello Peter, and thanks for the additional information. I agree it’s a lovely area, with lots to see. Sorry you won’t be joining us, but happy to hear you enjoyed your visit recently. Take care, Janet

I would have loved to have attended, but unfortunately I'm away that weekend. I hope everyone has a wonderful time!

Hi Chris, sorry you’re away that weekend.

The idea is for more regular, sociable events so fingers crossed next time you’ll be available. And maybe others will start to organise meet-ups. Many people get such a benefit from being able to chat freely to people who understand.

Take care, Janet

Can I just stick a reminder in this thread of a meetup this Saturday in Hertfordshire, so ideal for anyone in Beds, Herts, Bucks area, and even London and out to the north and west.

https://community.prostatecanceruk.org/posts/t21210-Prostate-Peddlers-Open-Day--Hertfordshire

Although it's a cycling day, I'm told some people will be staying in the cafe after the cyclists depart, so if you are determined not to cycle, still come along. See the other thread and let Charles know if you are coming so he has some idea of numbers.

It might be useful to say here too if you're coming, then I can try and make a point of saying hello to any other forum members there. (It's my first time there too.)

Hello, and I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful Easter weather - it's even like the middle of summer up in Yorkshire!

I've just updated the list of those hoping to come to Northallerton as below. If anyone else is thinking of joining us, please let me know?

We are planning for it to be a sociable meet-up in the centre of beautiful Northallerton and once we have expected numbers I'll start to confirm exactly where.

There is a lot of accommodation in and around Northallerton for anyone wanting to stop over and make a break of it, and also a train station which is well served with trains from all directions. The station is only a short distance from Northallerton centre and from York. It is on the main line from Scotland to London and also cross country routes.

For drivers Northallerton is close to the A1(M) - north of York and south of Darlington.

If you are not sure yet whether you can make it, or have any questions, please let me know. It will be great to see you - old friends or new ones we haven't met yet.

Those currently planning to attend are:

Janet (JLBatty)

George (George_H), Lynn and Katrina

Aase Christensen

Lynne Cook (Lynne)

Keith and Camilla Powell (Keith & Camilla)

Lesley and Philip Baker (Philip & Lesley)

We have some other members who are possibly going to be able to make it, but are not sure yet, so I will add them if, and when, they confirm.

Take care, Janet

Hello all,

Just a quick update to say I've booked an area in the bar of the Allerton Court Hotel, Darlington Road, Northallerton, DL6 2XF allertoncourthotel.co.uk from 12.00 noon on Saturday 6th July. If anyone else wants to join us please let me know.

The bar menu is on the hotel's website and is a fairly typical bar menu. This area is more relaxed than the more formal restaurant which I thought would be nicer for a sociable meet-up. It also opens up onto a garden area which could be useful if we get a hot and sunny day!

The hotel, which has a large car park, is on the outskirts of Northallerton, on the A167 just north of the High Street, a few minutes walk from the centre of Northallerton. The railway station is at the other end of the High Street, around a mile away, but I am happy to pick anyone up from the station. The station has direct links with Kings Cross, on the London-Edinburgh route, and has a regular supply of trains from York, a 20-25 minute ride away.

northallerton.info has more information on the area. Worth a visit is the Saturday market in the town centre. Also Lewis & Cooper, a speciality food and drink shop and cafe, often referred to as the Fortnum & Mason of the north. For anyone wanting to stop over in the area there are plenty of pubs and restaurants for evening meals and some magnificent countryside and lovely villages close by.

If anyone is thinking of joining us and wants any more information, please let me know.

Thanks, Janet

Meeting up on Saturday 6th July @ NORTHALLERTON

Dear Friends,

Here's the latest news about the event from Janet (Jlbatty).

If you're already on her mailing list, you'll have seen this already, but if anyone else here would like to join the 'mad bunch' on July 6th please email me at:

georgehardy51@msn.com

and I'll add your name to Janet's list

Hello all,

Just a quick update to say that I have booked an area in the bar of the Allerton Court Hotel, Darlington Road, Northallerton, DL6 2XF - allertoncourthotel.co.uk from 12.00 noon on Saturday 6th July and am looking forward to seeing you all there. Currently there are likely to be twelve of us, but I’ll put a message on the forum to see if anyone else is wanting to join us.

Attendees so far are:

George, Lynn and Katrina Hardy
Aase Christensen
James Grant and Liz
Keith and Camilla Powell
Lynne Cook
Philip and Lesley Baker
and me.

The bar menu is on the hotel’s website and is a fairly typical bar menu. I chose this area as it is more relaxed than the main restaurant for a sociable meet-up. It opens up onto a garden area too so useful if it is a hot and sunny day!

I am assured that the hotel can provide gluten free options and if anyone has any other requests if you let me know I can check with them. They are happy to take pre-orders to make sure they have what we want available, but otherwise we are welcome to order on the day.

The Allerton Court Hotel is on the outskirts of Northallerton - just on the A167 north of the High Street. So just a few minutes walk from the centre of Northallerton but with a large car park. It is at the opposite end of town to the railway station - around a mile away. I will have my car and am happy to pick anyone up from the railway station. The railway station has direct links to Kings Cross on the London to Edinburgh line. Alternatively there are plenty of trains from York, taking around 20-25 minutes.

To find out more about Northallerton have a look at northallerton.info. One place definitely worth a visit is Lewis & Cooper, often referred to as the Fortnum & Mason of the north. It has a fantastic range of speciality food and drink and also a cafe. On Saturday there is a popular market in the centre of Northallerton. There are also numerous nice little cafes, including a 'Betty’s tearooms', another Yorkshire institution. For those of us who are staying over we have a selection of pubs and restaurants for an evening meal.

Close by are many beautiful traditional villages and stunning countryside. If anyone has any questions I am happy to try to answer as I’ve been lucky enough to live within reasonable travelling distance of this beautiful area for most of my life. And once we know our final numbers I can get more information or organise other trips to local attractions over the weekend.

More info about venue:

allertoncourthotel.co.uk

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 6th.

Take care and best wishes,

Janet

and me.

I'm really looking forward to seeing old friends again, and I know George is too, but if anyone else wants to join us please let me know. Even if you don't know anyone on the list you are very welcome, just let me know if you want any more information or want to join us.

Venue is the Allerton Court Hotel, Darlington Road, Northallerton DL6 2XF - www.allertoncourthotel.co.uk and I have booked it from 12.00 noon on Saturday 6th July.
