Any experience of Template biopsy

Has anyone any experience regarding template biopsy?   I am 60 years old.  Diagnosed July 2013 with a Gleason 6 and PSA 8.3, and also with an enlarged prostate.  @ October 2014 my PSA is 11.4 and the consultant wants me to have a template biopsy to see if Active Surveillance is still a viable option.

I am unsure whether to go along with this or just to admit defeat and go for a radical prostatectomy.  I've read that template biopsies can cause problems and complications during a prostatectomy and if this is going to be inevitable in the next 2 years I'm wondering if I should just go for it now.

Has anyone any experience of this?

Hi Eric,

I cant comment on the option for n RP as I didn't have that option myself.

However, I've been down the template biopsy route.

See my reply in this thread

Hi Eric,

Sorry not to have replied sooner, but I only had my template biopsy yesterday.

It was straightforward, a walk in the park and nothing to worry about.

Certainly better, in that it gives far more info than a TRUS biopsy.

AND you want all the info you can get before you make treatment decisions.

So my advice to anyone offered a template biopsy is to go for it.

:)

The TB was not a problem, but I did go into retention afterwards and had to have a catheter put in and was kept in hospital overnight after having to go to A and E.

The results found a higher proportion of cancer than the original biopsy which made my mind up to have the RP.

Stay Calm And Carry On.
