Does anyone know if it is ok to drink pommegranate juice while taking a statin,on the information leaflet for simvastatin it says to avoid grapefruit juice but someone told me to also avoid pommegranate juice.

My husband has advanced prostate cancer and has just started to drink pommegranate juice,he also takes 20mg simvastatin daily.

Hello Kat, sorry you are here, I like your OH have just been diagnosed with advance PC, my OH was just writing out the shopping list and as we had heard that P juice was so good thought we would give it a fo. I then thought the same as you is it ok with simvastatin, so looked on here only to find your post. I have looked through the TOOL KIT ( if you havent ordered one do you will find it useful ) and it doese say Pjuice may react with some prescription drugs. Looked on the internet ( cant belive every thing ) and found most said no with simvastatin, ask your oncologist first.this link may help.http://pennstatehershey.adam.com/content.aspx?productId=107&pid=33&gid=002881.  I will waite untill I see my Oncologist next week or if any other post come up.

Keep thinking win.

Interesting question. My hubby Jacques has been enjoying Pomegranate Juice for over a year now. He was on statins but because of giddiness which he always felt was down to the statins even when dosage reduced. He stopped taking them after talking it over with GP. Giddiness/vision problems improved.
He had heard of others having  dizzy spells with statins, not prostate cancer related.
Have not asked Onco about pomegranate juice, Jacques has just started chemo every 3 weeks (cabazitaxel).
Think it might be a good idea Jacques stops until we get ok from Onco on pomegranate juice as had giddiness again yesterday but thought it probably the chemo!!
Must get the tool kit, thanks for the tip davlyn..

I take 20mg Simvastatin per day and also drink Pomegranate juice daily.

I asked my GP about it and he didn't think there was a problem.  But was not really definitive but I have carried on taking both.

Hello Kat,

thank you for starting this message!

I've recently been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer at T3.

I also have been type 2 diabetic for 12 years, then 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with heart disease! Dear Lord, can my life get any better?http://community.prostatecanceruk.org/editors/tiny_mce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif

Speaking to my mother this afternoon and saying I was drinking a glass of pomegranate juice daily, she says I ought to check with my GP, regarding the juice.  Well, I'd sooner stop taking the low dose statins I'm currently on, I forget the name.

Thank you,

                 Frank.

Hello Martyn,

thanks for that. I may well do the same.

My GP is very keen on keeping an eye on my diabetes, even though for past 4 years, my control is good, she keeps banging on about it, my blood pressure and cholesterol. Just the way she carries on, affects my blood pressure!http://community.prostatecanceruk.org/editors/tiny_mce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif  Therefore I have more respect for my diabetic nurse, who has been looking after me from day one.

All I need now is for someone to look after my heart disease, and someone to look after my cancer. At the moment, I only have 1 person to turn to - my wife.  I have yet to discover with satisfaction, what person is taking charge and supervising my cancer treatment.

What type of Pomi. juice do you guys drink ?

Can you let me have some details please. Is it 100% Pomi. I can only seem to find the watered down stuff in our supermarket.

Thanks

I haven't researched the different types of Pomegranate juice available - most are called "Pomegranate Juice Drink", so have other things in them.

I usually drink ASDA's brand or PomeGreat.

I've been drinking Pomegranate juice for 8 years now and have always managed to find a brand that is made from pure pomegranate juice rather than the rubbish "juice drinks" made from the concentrated juice.

For a number of years the Suncrest Pure Pomegranate juice was available in 1lt bottles at a very competitive price but had to purchased in bulk from just a few suppliers who were located in the south of England but Suncrest stopped producing it and I had to look elsewhere.

I now buy Biona Organic Pomegranate juice and if you shop around online you will find quite a few suppliers who supply it from as little as £3.79 a bottle and purchases amounting to more than £40 - £45 usually mean free delivery is included.

I usually order 12 bottles online (enough for 48 days) and they are delivered the following day which is a lot easier than how it used to be a few years ago when I had to drive a round trip of a 100 or so miles to pick up a bulk order.

I shan't recommend any particular supplier as they are all out to beat each other on price and can very as much as 60p - 70p from one month to the next, so just Google Biona 1 lt Organic Pomegranate Juice and find the best deal.

p.s. I've been on Statins for as long as I've been drinking Pomegranate juice and suffered no ill effects and none of the health professionals I've discussed it with have been concerned over my taking both together.

Best taken apart. i.e. take tablet hours away from drinking juice & should be o.k.

Grapefruit juice & Pom juice can affect liver in processing some meds. The result is a build up in blood stream of the medication to a higher level. If taken apart this effect gives time for liver to do it's work uninterrupted by juice effects.

My husband drinks the brand called POM, which is pure pomegranate juice, although there is also a version that's a blend of pomegranate and apple. It comes in a weird bumpy bottle. Sainsburys sell it, but our local Morrisons seem to have stopped stocking it. He is also taking statins now, so thanks for the advice on time of day, Rob - this is quite reassuring as he takes the statins at bedtime and the juice at breakfast.

Just be careful about how you write "Pom" on your shopping list, or you find yourself wondering, "Why did I think I needed to buy porn?"
