After first visiting his GP at end of October the time has come at last for Stuart to have his Da Vinci surgery on Thursday, it's been an emotional weekend seeing friends and family and his head is now well and truly out of the sand. Stuart had found things very difficult to talk about and had practically read nothing until last Thursday he had his pre op and met with the specialist urology nurse, it seemed after that meeting (she was fantastic BTW) a switch went on in his brain and the reality of it all hit him. We looked at everything online over the weekend and talked so much about his fears especially about the incontinence and ED. He knows that I love him so much and I am here 100% and we will now face this together and whatever life throws at us we will get through it, I have also had some lovely helpful PM's from some of the forum members and one from Chris today came at the right time and Stuart appreciated it so much. Last night a strange thing happened, Stuart called over to our neighbour with a parcel that had been left for him and it turns out he has PC. He called me over and we sat in their garden for a couple of hours and he talked us through his experience with some great advice - the wine they gave also went down well! Anyway once again thanks so much for all your help and advise over the last 8 months it has been really appreciated.

Will let you know how he gets on.

Trish and Stuart

All the very best for Thursday.

Your post is lovely Trish you have captured the love you both share in such a meaningful way. I only saw it just now as despite the time you posted it new threads can take a while to appear. I think it is common for anyone facing such surgery to be very quiet about it all until it is really about to happen it is a kind of coping mechanism I guess.

At least now with your help and that of his medical team Stuart is ready.

It seens amazing how often someone living so close has PCa but I guess with the stats so high we should not be so surprised, at least you know you have someone very close at hand who will understand as well as all us lot of course!

Will be thinking of you both so be sure to let us know how Stuart is recovering and how you are doing too.

Best wishes

Perhaps not the best way to start a new day for you both. I sincerely hope its a minor blip and Stuart feels better and more comfortable as today progresses. With all you have been through in the last few days you must also be drained and exhausted and the road to recovery will no doubt have hiccoughs but hopefully the worst is behind now and its onwards and upwards from now on.My thoughts are with you.

Hi Trish,

My catheter is attached to my right leg and I sleep on the left side of the bed if I was laying on it on my back looking forwards.

Being very careful with the catheter and making sure it's not pulling and the tummy trauma area see in Stuart can sleep or at least position himself on his side when the kidney / back pain kicks in. I've been doing this and it helps no end, once in position it's comfortable, gives the back an instants rest. Even if it's for 30 mins at a time. It feels so much better.

It can be a little awkward getting into the position but slowly and carefully will do the trick.

Once a week has past, you'll get a good idea of where you are. I still have to use a pad a day, (It could last 3!!!!). It's so frustrating that after big improvements over the first 8 months, since Christmas, there seems to have been little change.

Hi Mo,

Thanks, today has still been quite good with just the odd dribble. Last night he got up twice to go to the loo, today still suffering a little with the gas around his chest but we were re-assured by the urology nurse yesterday that that is to be expected. We know that he must still take it easy for a while, it was nice yesterday as we went out for a nice lunch in London after the Hospital it made Stuart feel a bit more human!

Trish,

Problem is you only get half the story if you get the info in bits and pieces?

Although it was an uncomfortable 8 weeks wait for me, my preference was to wait until all the 'scores on the doors' were back.

I'm pleased I did, as I had a full explanation of the results from the 'main man' and he was able to answer any questions that I had based on all the info available to him....

T & S

Well done on your recovery, I thought I had done well back to work in 4 weeks so 3 weeks is brilliant although some will say way to soon.

I got my histology over the phone from my surgeon after three weeks, even though it was not quite the news I wanted it was what it was and I think until you get a post op PSA result a few weeks later a decision on possible further treatment may not be possible.

Thanks Chris

Dear All,

All went to plan and Stuart now back in his room and sleeping at the moment, they have said no solid foods today only clear liquids but if he was really hungry later they would give him consume - is that normal? He seems to be on lots of drugs so not complaining of any pain yet. May have to go by 4 as the rushour will be horrendous but my son will visit him this evening so he is not completely alone. To be honest I am feeling a bit drained so will feel better after a good night's sleep and then get back here by 9 in the morning, he seems calm enough and the nurses have promised to keep any pain relief topped up.

Thanks again for your good wishes xxxx

Can anyone help with some advice? Stuart in a lot of pain on his back kidney/rib area, gp did prescribe cocodomal today but after 3 hours pain was back he is a very quiet patient but I can see him wincing in pain and catching his breath. I told him to breath through nose and out of mouth and that did seem to help. Has anyone had pain like this after Da Vinci?

Xx

Trish I was in hospital for a while. Not just one day. And I was in quite considerable pain ( really ) for a good few days. So poor Stuart. I was sent home with the max. normal painkillers you can have. That was co-codamol ( paracetamol and codeine) , AND ibuprofen , every 4 hrs upto 3 times a day. The whole belly and rib area can be awful and I struggled to sit up sometimes. The drain area was sore as hell. Ensure he is outputting plenty of urine compared to what he is drinking. Please PM if worried we will try to help. But you know the score - hospital if he very much in pain. Every house should have a SATS monitor I reckon. It's easy to tell if someone is poorly using that
