Dad keeps getting blocked up...Help!

Hi,

I have posted on another part of the site and had a few responses but hoped I may get further feedback on here.

My dad has pubic catheter fitted and is getting blocked up all of the time.  Mum is having to flush him out 5-6 times a day and then more often than not having to call the district nurse.

He is having to wear incontinent pants and has as he describes a dripping tap effect of mucuss coming out of his penis.

He has spoken with the specialist nurses and has got some advice but it really isn't helping.

In a week he sees the eurologist, what kind of questions should he be asking?

I can get him to add more details of his PC history if that helps people in answering.

He can not go on like this, he is stuck in the house for fear of getting blocked up if he pops down to the shop etc.

What procedures can be done, I have no idea what the options are but my Dad/Mum are really desperate and need some advice

Hope someone can help

Thanks

Chris

Have a look at the above link, page three gives a couple of tips which I have used in the past. There is also reference to a catheter irrigation system which may be useful.

Thanks Chris

I would be asking whether there is a possibility of a deep seated urinary tract infection - some of them are cunning and do not show up on standard urine tests, and the cunning ones do not respond to normal antibiotics. I would also be asking whether (if they don't think it is infection) it could be that the catheter is simply irritating the bladder.

Does dad drink cranberry juice to help soothe the bladder? And does he have baths or showers? I wonder if that might make a difference.

Just my view but I think the most important thing is to make it clear to the urologist and anyone else who will listen that this is more than just an occasional problem. Take along a diary of every time it blocks and also every time the district nurse has to be called out.
