6 weeks post Da Vinci. is this normal?

Hi all,

Finding this forum very helpful! My OH had Da Vinci surgery 6 weeks ago but is still suffering quite severe pain in the perineum and stinging at the end of his penis. Is this normal?

It is keeping him awake at night and finding it quite debilitating. He has notmforan infection (tests came back clear). Any suggestions of painkillers that might work?

He had nerve sparing on one side only and we go back to see the surgeon for results next week.

Thanks

Flossy

Hi Andy,

Thanks, my OH did ring the nurse - she thought it might be referred pain from the op and suggested ringing the GP. The GP was pretty useless and asked what painkillers he wanted rather than suggesting some. He is already taking full doses of paracetamol and neurofen. He has ended up with tramadol...

Cant see him being fit for work anytime soon and now on statutory sick pay so not good.

I had robotic surgery and had a lot of discomfort, primarily down the right side. This lasted for two weeks and gradually decreased to nothing after about six weeks. I returned to work after a month.

If the pain is as bad ss you describe then I dont think that is normal after the time lapse you have described. But of course pain tolerance differs between individuals so its hard to tell.

Personally I found going for ealks was extremely helpful.

Hello Flossy.
Can't help with your query as have no experience of it.
Just wanted to welcome you.

Thanks for the welcome and advice.

My OH is walking for 30-45mins most days. The tramadol is helping a little (once I got him to take them in addition to his normal regime of neurofen/paracetamol).

Hoping we get some answers from the surgeon when we see him Tuesday.

Hi Flossy
My perineum was very very painful for up to 10 weeks. Quite sore to sit on. But I didn't have penis tip pain at all. I still have internal bladder pain and some numbness , but overall things are improving at last after 14 weeks. Very worrying I know but things have a habit of improving slowly but surely. Good luck Tuesday

Hi Chris

Thanks - it is good to know my OH is not the only one with this issue! Also good to hear that things improve.

Many thanks

Hello Flossyfi,

Just joined this forum. I am 66 yrs age.

I am 7 weeks post op da Vinci RRP. (Gleason 4+3 T2cNOMX) Initial PSA 4.7. Results showed all margins clear and no lymph node involvement.

But am still getting perineal and rectal and scrotal, and occasional penis tip pains. What helps is lots of walking, hot baths, and especially a donut cushion to sit on. Or even lying down if you can.

Other forums on the web, (mainly American) all cite this side effect but all say the same thing; it definitely gets better in time, so hang in there!

Hi,

I am now 9 months post key hole surgery. My undercarriage was black and blue for a good few weeks after but I can't recall a severe pain and I only needed paracetamol.

I had quite a lot of perineal pain for about six weeks, oddly enough it was more intense if I stood still. Walking helped to keep it under control. My consultant said that the pain was normal considering the battering that my insides had gone through.

TURP then LRP in 2009/2010. Lots of leakage but PSA < 0.1 AMS-800 Artificial Sphincter activated 2015.

Hi, Thanks for all your replies. I had intended posting an update so here goes.
7 weeks post op we returned to the Consultant. With regard to the op, thread were positive margins. With regard to the pain, he didn't seem that concerned. From there the pain did not improve as as S gradually increased his hours back at work he found he had to lie on the bed of an evening as sitting was too painful.
3mths follloe-up appt-mid November, PSA was <0.1. YAY! Thank the Lord! However the surgeon was now concerned about the pain - could be a urethral stricture or a clip may have moved. So S had a cystoscopy under local - a tight stricture was found. Unfortunately this procedure actually made things worse so S called the secretary as instructed who tried to fob him off back to the Gp or A/E!. S persisted, was sen in clinic 3 days (last tues) and a flow test was performed. Consequently he was admitted lay Friday for a cystoscopy under GA last Friday. He had a dilatation and urethrotomy (they had to cut the scarring that had formed in the urethra). He will have a catheter until New Year's Eve.
So he is feeling very sore - he is meant to be using the catheter with a valve and no bag but is finding this causes spasms when he releases it. So using bags for now. Praying for a miracle that this will work - the alternative would not be good - he is only 51.
He spends the day on the bed as sitting as too uncomfortable still. Standing isn't too bad so he is putting himself to work doing the washing up.
Hopefully have a donut cushion arriving today so that he can sit for his Christmas dinner!

Hi flossy,

It's so awful when you are right in the thick of it. My oh had his op on Dec 1st last year. He has a shoulder problem, and seven hours upside down on his front left him in absolute agony for weeks after the op. I remember thinking it would never get better.

It will.

Try not to think ahead as to where he 'should' be or compare to other people. It only serves to make things worse. It will take as long as it takes.

thinking of you
