Pain and discomfort following biopsies

I had 12 biopsies taken about 10 days ago. Had some blood coloured urine at the start of pee's for about 5/6 days. Stopped for a couple of days and is now intermittent.

However, prior to the  biopsies I had no problems urination and no pain or constant urges to go for a pee. Since the biopsies I have had dull aching pains between my anus, scrotum and inside top of legs, which has mainly subsided but not totally gone, but over the last 3 days or so I have now developed a constant discomfort with a feeling that I need to constantly need to go for a pee. Even the pressure from trousers across stomach seems to exacerbate the feeling which makes walking and normal activities uncomfortable and when sitting there is just this nagging sensation in the bladder/prostate area.

Temperature is OK and there is no burning while urinating. Are these fairly normal symptoms or am I just unlucky?

Hi Rudge,

I take it you had a 12 core TRUS biopsy. Men do have varying results from this. (I only had a very slight amount of blood in my urine and for just a couple of days). For some men there is more blood and for a longer period. Perhaps of more concern is the possibility of infection and maybe varying pain. Infection can sometimes prove stubborn t o overcome. If the situation does not improve very soon, in your position I would consult my GP.

I remember the blood which was there for a while, but certainly no pain. Get checked out. Please don't ignore it.

Thanks for the replies.

Spoke to the nurse here who thought it may be local infection. Have made an appointment to see GP today.

GP rang and asked that I go back to the urology dept that did the biopsies to see what they considered normal before he dished out any antibiotics. He will ring back later to see how I got on and then decide what to do.

Spoke to one of the urology sec's who got in touch with one of the Doctors. Their opinion, via the sec, was that as long as I am passing water, which I am and do not have a temp, which I don't then they are not worried but if it gets worse go back to them! Being a Friday today is not much help as there will be nobody there over the weekend.

Guess i've just got grin and bear it.

As regards 1st Biopsy no blood. 2nd pretty much as you but discomfort gone in a day.

As regards grin and bear it. If it does get worse then it could well be infection in which case don't take chances so perhaps a visit to Walk in Centre?

My husband had very little discomfort from trans rectal biopsy, but has since had a trans perineal template biopsy with virtually same problems as you,he had no infection and it settled after 2 or 3 weeks.

Hi Guys,

It is some years now since I had my TRUS biopsy.

At the time, I am sure the advice was it would take some weeks to settle down, I experienced blood in my urine and semen for some weeks afterwards, initially red coloured but it went progressively darker brown, suggesting that it was blood that had bled within my prostate and/or bladder and had then aged a little inside me before it came out, we used to jokingly call it 'spunk of the Devil'.

The standard advice was that you had to wait 4-6 weeks after a TRUS biopsy before having a follow up MRI scan, because it was too difficult to see the cancer hidden by all of the internal bleeding, swelling and bruising caused by the TRUS.

It is often the case that T stages are 'revised' upwards in MRI scans following the initial T stage provided by the TRUS.  We had a doctor give a talk to our support group, he was of the opinion that these regradings may sometimes be erroneous as they may result from the MRI scan being done too soon after the TRUS, with bleeding/bruising being mistakenly identified as tumour.

Last year I had a template biopsy which didn't result in blood in urine for any significant amount of time, indeed getting over the constipation caused by the antibiotics was my biggest problem.

On the subject of infections, I recently had my GP test my urine and declare me free of infection, while my Consultant identified a prostate infection, so it is perfectly possible to have an infection in the prostate which doesn't show up in urine tests.

I don't want to worry you, but I was reading on the Internet of at least one guy who died from sceptacimia within days of his TRUS biopsy, I think it was either the Canadian's or Swedes who were reporting up to 1 in 20 TRUS biopsies resulting in infections so severe that the patient was hospitalised, this seems to be increasing over there as they have more antibiotic resistant strains of infection.  So if you don't feel well, don't feel sheepish about nipping down to A&E.

:)

Hi, I to experienced strange feelings about 3-4 weeks after the biopsy.

I felt like i was sitting on something between the anus and scrotum..

I also got burning sensations down the insides of both thighs and an ache in the genital region'

My Dr thought i had a groin strain, My McMillan nurse was unsure what it could be.

After a chat with one of the specialist nurses on here, she suggested i may have an infection after the

biopsy and to take this idea back to my Dr...I did and he found i did in fact have a water infection.

He gave me a weeks course of antibiotics...after a few days the symptom had eased but now at the end of the week seem to be back.

I am going back with another water sample tomorrow..hope the infection clears up as i start a 6 cycle of chemo next week.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Shaun
