Hi all, I find myself here trying to support my dad of 75, with limited k owledge, and like most dads, mine can be conservative with the truth :) he has metastatic prostate cancer....has received radiotherapy and hormone injection s, he has phoned me today with a new psa of 1.5, I think it was about 111? He seems happy with that. Is this a reason to be pleased? I am trying to get to grips with it all. I send you all my thoughts , and if I can ever offer words of support in return, they will be there , :). Niky

PSA of 111 down to 1.5 eh?
No wonder he is happy with that. So would I be.

I don't have experience of metastatic disease but there are number of members on here who do and I am sure somebody will be along to.

Hi Niky,
I should think he and his specialist will be happy with a PSA of 1.5 - it certainly suggests that the hormone treatment is working. Some men, even with mets, can stay well for many years with hormones although it is important to be aware that they don't work forever.

If dad isn't always good at giving a full picture, are you aware of why he had the radiotherapy? Has he had prostate cancer for a long time? Some men have radiotherapy over many weeks in an attempt to 'cure' the cancer while others only have a short course to give some relief from bone pain or to slow down the spread. I am not sure from your post whether dad had RT and then it metasticised later or whether he has always known it was incurable.

Hi Niky,

Sorry you join us due to your Dad having PCa. It would help us understand where he is rather better if you could say when he was first diagnosed and what the details of that diagnosis were; also the dose of radiation given. The good reduction from 111 PSA to 1.5 suggests this was likely mainly due to the HT which usually has a dramatic effect, particularly early on. As Lyn says, we don't know whether the RT was given as a long course to essentially attack cancer cells in the prostate and close to it or was given for metastasized hot spots.

Your Dad is entitled to all the information about his case and has only to ask his consultant or GP if this is not known to him.

Hi all many thanks for taking the time to reply. My dad was diagnosed in May. He had 6 weeks of radiotherapy as part of a trial ...I believe the stampede trial? He wouldn't have been offered it otherwise I believe. At diagnosis he was told it was metastatic and in his bones. I know it could have been worse..it's all this new "terminology" and for me, why this forum will be so valued. Take care all. Niky
