Hi My Dad was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer 6 months ago his PSA was 315 and has come down to 32 he has had a bone scan and it's not in his bones nor his, lymph nodes , he is on HT and that's all , but recently he has been suffering chronic pain in his legs and arms. The doctors have given him an ibuprofen rub to administer 3 times a day but it's not working. He was in severe pain today , he's going to the doctors again tomorrow, but, is this normal side effects of HT .....I'm so worried about him and he looks in pain , please help

Hi Linda so sorry to hear your dad in pain. My husband is 71 and has been on hormone treatment for 3 months prior to radiotherapy. He has had a few side effects, but not the pain you mention, pain relief rub does not seem to be helping so I feel you need to speak to your dads specialist for advice. There arepeople on this forum with much more experience who Im sure will offer their advive soon. Best wishes, hope you get help soon.

Hello Linda and welcome.
Sofijoan is quite right in that there are ladies and men on here that can advise regarding the pain your dad is having and whether it can be anything to do with the HT.

I can't unfortunately help either as I don't have the experience, but I do know that HT can cause loss of muscle tone.  If you are really worried and not getting the replies from members quickly enough to reassure you, why not telephone the specialist nurses on here and they may be able to help you (0800 074 8383 on their hotline hours of Mon-Fri 10-4 and Weds 10-8))

I am sure that there will be replies so hold on there until somebody comes along

Hi Linda,

Welcome but sorry that you find yourself on this forum, prostate cancer that has spread into other areas causes pain IE the bones, when it is localised it doesn't generally cause pain. So if your dads scans were clear then it is highly unlikely that it is the cancer that is causing the pain hence the ibuprofen for pain relief. Also you say that the pain is in his arms and legs and even with spread to bones the arms are almost never affected. Your dads starting PSA at 315 is quite high and you say he is on HT . Was anything else offered as treatment?

There are generally quite a few other treatments when there is no spread. Any other details than you can give will give others more scope to help you, so Gleason score etc .

Keep posting and stay positive.

Hi Linda

I agree with my friend above, if there is genuinely no spread then this is not likely to be related. HT can cause oesteoporosis after long term use and this can cause pain. I wonder if your dad has this anyway? I don't think pain is a side effect of HT so I think your dad needs to see his GP to investigate what's causing this, especially if the cream isn't helping, he may need stronger painkillers or antiinflammataries.

I hope this helps, I think this is n issue for his doctor to resolve.

He did have a high PSA, I'm surprised with no spread he hasn't been offered removal of the prostate or radiotherapy. Does he have any other conditions that would preclude treatment?

The other thing I wondered was whether his age is a factor.

I hope he has been able to get help by now. Let us know how he gets on

Kindest thoughts

Hi

He has been to the doctors and they have told him to come off his Cholerterol tablets to see if that help with the pain. He hasn't been offered any other treatment , he is 73 and doesn't have any other issues health wise other than his high cholesterol . After the MRI scans they said there was no obvious spread none in the bones not his lymph nodes but the consultant said there must be something with his high PSA but nothing else was done he was put on HT the consultant said that was the best treatment for just now !!! I don't know as I feel he should have been given something else

Some men find HT very debilitating but I can't recall anybody reporting actual pain if soreness in breasts. Any drug can have side effects which are not common so I can understand for the moment your Dad's GP wanting to see if stopping the Cholerterol tablets helps. It could be that his pain is not related to his PCa.

It is possible that there is some spread but this is not apparent from MRI scan. Sometimes concentrations of cancer cells are not sufficient to be readily seen in MRI scans, some of which are better than others. (Maybe a better scan would help.) Spread may be suspected but if it can't be seen it is difficult to treat although presumably it was identified in his Prostate as he is on HT. In this position I would want to ask my consultant what he thinks is the way forward. HT of itself is a way of restraining the cancer wherever it is and can reduce PSA significantly and the time it works for can vary from a matter of months to a number of years.
