Advise on number of samples for template biopsy

I had my template biopsy yesterday afternoon, everything went well I had little or no pain afterwards and I have not got any this morning. My concern is that when I asked my Urologist how many samples he took he said 27.

This seemed rather precise to me as I have been told that both my DRE and MRI scan were normal and the only reason for the biopsy was that I have a PCA count of 11.5 and I understood that the normal range of samples is 30 to 50.

I will have a chat with a specialist nurse on Monday to see if they know of any reason why the number of samples were so precis, but I would like to hear from anybody who has has a similar experience.

They stick the needles in at 5mm intervals so you probably just have a small prostate twsm - the average of 30 - 50 is probably based on the fact that so many men having template biopsy will have an enlarged prostate for whatever reason.

My psa had risen from 15 to 43 very quickly. My template biopsy was only 25 samples. I said that seemed quite a low number. He explained that if I had cancer it was very aggressive , and he would easily find it in those samples. He did find cancer but missed the really aggressive bit , which was found after another round of scans and a further TRUS biopsy.
Best wishes

My OH had a template biopsy in Feb. He had 46 cores taken because MRI had showed new areas of concern. Almost a prostatectomy I'd have thought
Good luck with your results
