Penile Rash

Not sure if this is anything to be concerned about but I've developed as rash on the head of my penis which is making it quite sore.

I suspect that this might be the cause of urine leakage and the fact that the urine stays in the pad until I change it.  If it's quite a common side effect then of course I know it will get better as long as I keep it clean and change the pad regularly.

Should I contact my GP or just see what happens and has anyone else had this happen to them?

Thanks.

Hi GD

Im no expert in side effects of your surgery but I know a bit about Babies and nappy rash!

Urine, being acidic, does cause a lot of soreness if it stays in contact with the skin for any length of time. Havng to wear pads makes the potential for this so much greater. Inerestingly enough if you wash too frequntly, too hard or with too much soap it actually removes the antibodies that naturally try to combat the irritation. I am only guessing here but it might be worth trying a thin coating of Sudocrem after washing, you can get it over the counter in most chemists and supermarkets quite cheaply. Also you can reduce the acid level in your urine by having a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda dissoved in water and drunk at night time.

If this doesn't ease the soreness and the rash in 48 hours then maybe ask your GP or clinicl nurse specialist. If you have any worse things like discharge or bleeding then don't hesitate go to them first.

I hope your progress post surgery is continuing well other than this.?

Best wishes

Dave,

You may well be right about what has caused the rash which I hope is not causing you much irritation but think getting the view of your GP might prove helpful, as perhaps there is some ointment that could be prescribed that would help alleviate the problem.

It might be worth trying an over the counter ointment first that a chemist could recommend as MO has suggested and if this does not help in a couple of days or so, then refer to you GP.

If you have been having wash more frequently, it may be a slight reaction to whatever soap / gel / etc that you use. Might be worth experimenting with (eg) Simple Soap, Dove or others known not to provoke reactions.
