Diagnosis delays

My first post. I would be most interested to hear about peoples “treatment journey times” from referral to diagnosis. From a blood test taken in September I had a PSA reading of 177 and was therefore referred to the hospital by my GP on the 21st September.

Oct 6th – appointment with a specialist nurse

Oct 18th MRI scan

Oct 24th Informed by nurse of results and told that I would require a biopsy.

As I did not receive a letter confirming a date for the biopsy I rang the Urology department to be told that the hospital had run out of the specialised “needles” and that there was a national shortage and they were trying to find a supplier! I have not to date received any official notification regards the delay.

I have since found out that the number requiring this biopsy is now thirty and the list started towards the end of September. I am informed that these needles have been sourced elsewhere and require a two week sterilization programme so I am to assume that the biopsy procedures will not commence before the 14th November?! Add to this the week++ for the results therefore so much government cancer guidelines for 62 days from referral to diagnosis.

I have contacted Patient Advice and Liason who have logged this as a “dangerous incident.” The anxiety of cancer is enough without having to contend with unnecessary delays.

I would have thought with a PSA of 177 the specialist would have had a clear view of the problem on the scan and with the scans being so detailed these days could give you a reasonable report of how strongly indicative of cancer the images were (the indicative scale goes from 1-5). Could you discuss with your GP whether it is possible to be referred straight to oncology (I assume it is urology appointments that are delayed) or a referral to a different hospital?

My experience has been so very different to yours. I've been shocked at the speed. mpMRI scan and biopsy and results within a fortnight.

I'm in Slough and the speed is brilliant.

I don't know how to advise you, but I'd be kicking up a real fuss now. My PSA was 6.2 to start with and now I have T3aN1Mx and a Gleason score of 7 - and I'm only 46.

I wouldn't accept the service you're being given.

Is it something to do with what part of the country you're in?

Indeed. Slough, ie Wexham Park, were very quick with me last year. Just over a month from first appointment to start of hormone therapy. I lost track of time and didn't know where I was with so many appointments crammed in. I have never heard of biopsies being delayed because of shortage of needles.
