High PSA test result - psa raised

Hi Everyone,
First off what a relief it was to find this site with so much useful information and support.

I haven feeling fatigued for a few months with no obvious cause and my GP added PSA to a number of other tests. It has come back as 15.9 and I'm being referred to a specialist. As this is so early in the process I am looking for advice on what to expect and if there's anything specific I should look out for and/or avoid.

Hello Mike and welcome

Firstly,do you have a history of enlarged prostate or urinary infection? They can sometimes raise PSA.

Did your GP do a DRE (finger up the bottom) test and if so what did he say about it

When you see a specialist he is likely to do another DRE whether you've had one or not. The results of that, coupled with your 15.9 PSA will probably result in an MRI followed by biopsy (or possibly the other way round)

You could while you are waiting for an appointment, download the Toolkit from publications which may help you with questions to ask the specialist. Write down any questions you want to ask and best to take somebody with you to listen to the answers as there will be a lot for one person to take in.

Is it a two week cancer referral or a normal referral?  I was referred under the two week scheme and had my scan and biopsy completed in that time.  Sadly, it was positive for PCa.

Sorry you find yourself here but you are amongst friends!
The good news is that once the system kicks into gear it goes quite quickly and you will get a diagnosis in person post the biopsy. Take someone along with you to the appointments especially the diagnosis. It all becomes a blur and it's good to have someone else take notes. You will have meetings with consultants post the diagnosis if it's PCa, so you don't have to make any immediate decisions. As Sandra suggested, download the toolkit and read the other conversations to brief yourself so you know what to ask.
This is a great community so don't hesitate to ask questions.
