Swollen wrist & rash

My dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer last year and has been under going chemo.  However, in the last few days he's developed a red rash (a bit like eczema) on his wrist which is also very swollen.  He's also had very painful back pain which I'm sure is due to the cancer which has sadly spread into his spine and pelvic bone.

He visited the doctor today with my mum who was baffled and just suggested rubbing moisturiser on the area and re-evaluating it in a few days.  He doesn't have a temperature and the area isn't hot to touch or painful.

Anyone else come across these symptoms or have any advice?  I'm just concerned as the back pain and rash have appeared at the same time - could it be a blockage?  He has stents in his kidneys but unfortunately the last op didn't go as planned as the cancer was obstructing one of the kidneys so they couldn't complete the procedure...maybe this is the issue?

You may not have the answers but if anyone has similar symptoms I'd love to hear from you.

Thank you

Hello George and welcome to the site.

As you've not received any replies yet I thought perhaps you could either telephone one of the nurses on this site 0800 074 8383 or maybe a better idea to telephone the place where he has chemo and ask their advice.

I don't think GPs are really geared up to the side effects of cancer treatment, they are only General Practitoners after all

Thank you for your replies.  My dad had his usual appt at the hospital yesterday prior to his next chemo session today and they believe the swollen wrists and red rash are a side effect of the chemo but it was a bit of a stab in the dark to be honest.  Similarly with the pain in back issues - didn't offer a scan or anything just assumed it was the fact that he only has one working kidney at the moment.  Bit disappointed with the lack of 'proper' answers to be honest.

However, my mum did ring the specialist nurse assigned to this web page who was very kind and helpful and sent all sort of info in the post for them to look through.  We'll definately stay connected to this page as the conversations are really useful.  Thanks.
