Gutted -1 week post opp Radical Prostratectomy.

Update on my journey 10 days post opp De-Vinci Robotics.

Well opp went well I am told described as text book with nodes also removed.

I had the expected couple of days struggling with Catheter then recovery at home.

Understand I may need salvage radiotherapy but fingers crossed until patholigists results are in as hopefully the Gleason 9 aggresive strain has all been captured?

Fast forward to Monday when I returned to Urology to have catheter removed. Again text book removal with four hours observation to ensure I was peeing ok. Then given months supply of pads and Viagra and sent home to recover.

This is when it all went Pete Tong after I was doing so well - decided to have a nap after tough day and awoke screeching with pain. Bladder full and hitting the most painful spasms imaginable. Actually blacked out with pain and quickly in ambulance on morphine drip & gas/air in way back to hospital. Gutted as after enduring camera investigaton in addmissions it was decided that catheter must go back in.

Understand I may have experienced some trauma on removal or worse case I have a leekage where bladder has been stitched to pipe?

Going home today for another two weeks with catheter then I understand I will have X-ray to determine if they need to open me up again for repair?

Trying to remain positive but not easy at present but hopefully this is just a set back.

Any comments, similar experiences or advice more than welcome as usual.

Sorry to hear of your problems.

Was the Catheter and camera investigation done in Urology or the emergency department ?

When you say the Catheter removal was text book, did it get stuck , was it yanked out ?.

I have had numerous Catheters fitted using cameras and guide wires etc.but not straight after a failed TWOC or so soon after a RARP, I would be interested to know how it is done.

Reaĺly sorry you've had problems following your operation. It's not what you wanted.

I'm not an expert, I wasn't allowed an operation, so I can't really offer any advice. I just wanted to wish you well and hope they can sort things out for you very soon.

I was just a little concerned, we often say on here do not let any Tom dick or Harry work on your bits after a radical prostatectomy. There have been some horror stories of guys going to the emergency department to have catheters fitted post op.

My catheter got stuck on the way out and 3 years later I am still having problems, I don't think anyone else could have my misfortune.

Take it easy but keep mobile and even if the Viagra does work I work abstain from any strenuous exercise at least until your first post op consultantation, probably six weeks post op.

Sorry to hear this. I was glad to get the catheter out so feel for you having to get a new one.

Like you, I'm a young Gleason 9. First two post-op PSA results have been good, so I've declined radiotherapy so far, although they did offer it to me.

You have all my sympathy - catheters are the devils doings (bit like celery) but at times necessary. I sincerely hope you have a good and swift outcome, and carry on with your recovery.

I too am a young Gleason 9, but the evil PCa escaped into a node and I had positive margins, so I'm straight on to hormone treatment and starting RT next week for 33 sessions, just three months post op. Life hey?!

All the best. . Google . Search on here hem o lok. Did they say and give you any feed back ?? Obviously bladder neck re connection is very complex !

Good news is after 1 single episode . Over about 2 days. Never had any major pains since.

Flow actally better. . Although tends to spray and aim sometimes off ! Ie not a single stream . I'm not a plumber lol.

You sound as if things have got very well, generally. .

Just to say same happened to myself had to have catheter resisted for another ten days due to acute retention same day as twoc .I am now 14 days after second twoc and everything has been fine this time around .

Hi Chris yes catheter in/out all in Urology under team who done opp.

All manual intervention including the camera so happy enough witb methods - suppose they have little choice but to affect some trauma at the join to the bladder, just hope it all now heals in next 2 weeks?

I'll try and help as much as I've experienced. As had something similar ish..

However my 10/10 pain only lasted about 5 minutes And on about 5 occasions.

May I clarify. Where you fully continent after catheter removal. Also how much 'work' are you doing? ?

Mine came very unexpectedly after a very full bladder and I had been for a long walk. I had been holding on probably 30 mins.beyond comfortable.

I was never told the reason other than these possible. .

1. Cramp. Spasm . Bladder wall re-syncing !

2. Hem o lock clip may have got lodged and then passed

Mine always happened 30 seconds AFTER emptying bladder.

Enscrucating pain. I understand totally. My threshold I consider quite high. This was like a knife plunged into the bladder. I was immobile, sweating prefusily . No one around. Thankfully it slowly reduced over about 10 minutes to a manageable level.

It's very unlikely your 'join' has leaked. I asked about this and was told there would be far serious symptoms. Has you urine always been clear ? I had no visible blood in mine at all. Apart from this my op was a wall in the park in many ways.

Hope you are feeling a lot better .. Gordon

only obviously info to add is Try and not over do it. Keep caffeine, alcohol and anything to potentialy irritate bladder to an absolute minimum , at least for month. Obviously don't let urine get strong either. Keep the waterworks active... I still get odd twinges, dull aches , pains however zero leakage and seldom get up at night.

Glad someone relates to the pain as it was off the map.

I was coping well continence wise prior to this event, but only really had a couple of hours with the catheter out.

Urine was pretty clear also. This immediatley after surgery and catheter removal - if I am honest thought it was all too good to be true.

Will keep you posted.

Update: booked in for a Cystography tomorrow to determine whether catheter can be removed - understand this is carried out by a radiologist with assistance from x-ray department.
Have read up on this and apparently dye is injected through catheter to view bladder in more detail - just hoping I get the go-ahead for catheter removal as really struggling with spasms and leakage after 3 weeks now. Actually wearing pads as well as enduring the joys of the catheter.

Has anyone undergone Cystography procedure in the past?
