PSA all over the place

I'm a bit concerned and don't know what to make of my PSA scores. I'm 54 years old. in 2010 my PSA was was 1.0 and was not tested again until 2014 when it was 4.0 Then gradually crept up until it jumped from 4.6 (Oct. 2015) to 7.1 (February). Had a DRE (benign) and then sent by urologist for MRI. The MRI report said 'MRI Lesion: bilateral PZ and central lesions 3/5 on Likert scale, TRUS Vol 42cc, PSA Density 0.17. Then had a biopsy which showed 'some patchy chronic inflammation' and 'atrophic change' but no evidence of malignancy.

Then PSA went up to 8.4 in April which set alarm bells ringing but went down to 5.3 last month. I would suggest that the difference is that before the 8.4 one I did not abstain from sex 48 hours prior to the test whereas I did abstain before the second one. Could this account for the drop in PSA? Was the 8.4 reading in April of concern?I have a telephone consultation with the urologist but it's not until September.

I get up at night once or twice to urinate but don't urinate much during the day unless I have drunk very great quantities. I have no back or pelvic pain.

Many thanks for reading this and would appreciate some reassurance.

Your PSA jumping around is typical of inflammation and / or infection.

Having sex in the couple of days prior to the blood test can result in a false high.

It seems you have had all the appropriate tests and your specialist is confident that your raised PSA is due to benign causes.
