Comparison English and Welsh NHSTreatment profs.

My PC has recently metastasised into my lung - a small lesion and it's currently being succesfully controlled with Enzolutamide at a N.E. England centre of excellence.  For personal reasons I should like to relocate to south Wales, but hear dismal stories about the level of treatment available in Cardiff/Swansea - in particular that individual treatment plans must be approved by the National Assembly.

My heart says return to an area I love, but my head says stay where I am.  Any views by those who may know, or experienced with advanced PC in South Wales would be really welcome.

Our experience of Velindre hospital in Cardiff has been good - although the treatment wasn't successful the consultants were on the ball and up to date. Staff in general were universally kind and helpful, frequently going the extra mile. The district nurse team in the Cardiff area were excellent and hospice/palliative support was superb. Radium 223 isn't yet available in Cardiff but should be sorted next year - meanwhile they will send you to Bristol if this treatment is needed. They are also linked up with the Toparp trials for men who don't respond to other treatments.

Don't know where you hear your dismal stories from? Beware Tory propaganda. Individual treatment programmes are determined by consultants not by the Assembly and Enzo is available as required. Go where your heart tells you to be. Wales is good for your health and good for your soul!

WE were treated at Velindre and the service was first rate. Very caring specialist ( we are not allowed to name them on here but I can if you pm me) and the latest LINAC Radiotherapy machine.

Of course, it is very busy there and the out patient department itself is dated but I believe that they have all the latest equipment and again as I understand it the consultants control the treatments that they offer.

Ps we went to London for a second opinion and the private specialist there who is renown said that we would get exactly the same treatment with her as we were getting in Wales.

I can understand OP's concern with reports of people moving from Wales to England or getting an accommodation in England because treatment unavailability and this was in the Guardian, hardly a right wing paper! https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/feb/09/how-healthcare-differs-across-the-uk

I was refused a PET scan by the Welsh Authorities....it even went to appeal and was still refused....I live in Wales but as we are close to the border we are sent to Shrewsbury in England.....the PET scan was originally requested at Stoke on Trent but because I live in Wales the funding had to come from Wales.....it was then requested at Cardiff...but still refused.....the reason given was that the PET scan was unreliable in detecting PC, and therefore the money was not available.....
