Depends how you define uncommon.
Most studies put it at 2-5%, and, as you say, things have probably improved as RT techniques have improved. Such studies are necessarily retrospective.
From what you say, you and your brother have not had a 'typical' experience, and that's awful. And, of course, the same thing could yet happen to me. But individual experience does not invalidate studies of many thousands of men - who may be luckier than we are.interesting article on the subject!
