Cycling and PSA levels

Hi.....Am a keen cyclist and try to get out on the bike regularly. Was told by my GP that my increased PSA levels could be due to trauma caused to my prostrate due to the cycling. (road and trails). Have been advised to stay off the bike for around 4 wks prior to blood tests. My DRE has flagged up little concern and my PSA was 4.9 at my last test.
Anyone else got experience of cycling and PSA tests? ....and if so, how long did you stay out of the saddle for pre test?
Thanks and regards
James

Hello James and welcome.

We do have other cyclists on here who will no doubt comment but I do know that we advise men to abstain from cycling and intercourse just before a PSA test as it can have an effect.

Best Wishes

The GP has confused 2 things - a) men should try to avoid cycling in the 24 hours prior to a PSA test (they should also avoid orgasm and anal sex) and b) competitive cyclists (as in the really serious professional kind of cyclist) are likely to have higher than average PSA but are no more likely to get prostate cancer than other men

Your PSA is too high to be explained away by the 24 hour thing (it only puts a tiny percentage on) so unless you are a member of Team Sky, if you were my brother partner dad I would be asking for a referral to a urologist rather than dealing with a GP who has a little bit of information but is obviously not a specialist.

Shocked that your surgeon said it was okay to cycle so soon after surgery. How has it affected your erectile function? John had to stay off the bike for 7 months - the surgeon said it was pointless having nerve sparing and then not giving the nerves a chance to recover - but it was worth it not to have permanent ED

Hi James,

I'm an avid cycling, but I've also been living with an enlarged prostate for many years. I had a biopsy done around 8 years ago that confirmed I have chronic prostatitis. I was told to wait 3 months before cycling after my biopsy. My biopsy was triggered when I reached a PSA of 5.0, but you should not read too much into that, as it's more to do with the rate of rise, than purely a stand alone number. My numbers have slowly been raising and now reach 10 which slightly worries me, but I've also increased my mileage with the excellent weather.

To the do a PSA test I was always told to avoid both cycling and sexual activity for 48hrs prior.

As your finding out James a PSA is a blunt instrument and not a diagnoisis in itself, just a gauge, but one that needs a watchful eye. I'm having another test in two months time.

Best wishes

Keith
