Waiting and worried

Hi my name is Paul, between Christmas and new year I was experiencing pain while urinating, later that day I noticed red spots in the urine, a while later the pain became excruciating and the little I was producing was just blood. I went to my GP the next morning and he gave me a sample bottle and did a blood test, he gave me a weeks course of antibiotics, after a couple of days it cleared up, the sample came back as borderline infection, I finished the course and all was fine until I went back to work the week after, the pain was back along with the blood, I wet myself 3 times on my way home from work I just couldn't control it. I went back to the doctor and did another sample and had another blood test which incorporated PSA test, this came back at 5.5 which he explained is a little high but the infection could push this up, he referred me to a consultant who advised he can't do anything else until he is sure the infection has cleared up, I am waiting for the results of the third sample and having an ultrasound scan this week, am I worrying for nothing?

Hello Paul and welcome

Infection is quite likely to raise a PSA , so yes, 5.5 is a little high but could well be the result of the infection.

I wouldn't say you are worrying for nothing, because you have a problem and you want it sorted.

Are you worrying un-necessarily? Personally, given what you've described, I think there is only an infection to worry about and sometimes it takes a few attempts using different antibiotics to finally nail the nuisance.

The scan will show anything untoward. If it does, then you're ahead of the game aren't you.

You will already be under an expert who will do any other investigations .

Please come back with your scan results and anything else that is suggested to you and if we can help we will.

There isn't much information as present and apart from suggesting that you drink plenty of fluid to help flush the infection away there isn't much I can add.

Good luck.

PS. I see that your dad had Prostate cancer so I do understand your fears.  Take it one step at a time at the moment.  No sense in worrying yourself silly over what might be. !!
