On holiday when next hormone injection is due.

I've just arranged appointments for a PSA blood test and my husband's second Decapeptyl injection towards the end of March.  His next PSA blood test and third injection will, therefore, be in June.  However, we're going to be on holiday in the UK at this time.  Can anyone tell me what happens with this, please?  Is it all right for him to have it one or two weeks late?  Or can he have it at the surgery in the town where we are on holiday?

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's really good to know, thank you.

Yes Lyn hot even in N Yorkshire. Perhaps I picked the right year! Beautiful countryside and some picturesque villages I saw near Malton and Castle Howard + the moors and dales. Nice place to have a holiday, then there is York just south, a 'must' place to visit.

Hope holiday goes well.

Hi my husband tony is on zoladex and was told there is a leeway of 10 days either side, he is having his next injection early as we will be on holiday abroad.

Decapeptyl is a monthly or 3 monthly dose so there is a little bit of flexibility in the timing of it although your oncologist would probably advise that you have it a week early rather than a week late. Any more than a week either side I think needs to be discussed with your onco or nurse specialist. Zoladex belongs to a different group of hormones which must be given every 28 days or 84 days and should not be varied at all. If it does have to be varied then it must be before the due date rather than after.

Not sure who advised that there was a 10 day leeway but if the next PSA test shows a rise you would at least know the reason for this and hopefully would see it fall again at the next test.

When we travelled we took a Prostap injection with us and asked local doctor to administer it.

It takes a bit of faffing about beforehand to get agreement in writing - but worth a thought.

You say that you are travelling to UK on holiday Genevieve - where are you normally based?

I probably wasn't clear, Alison. We do live in the UK and will just be travelling to the North Yorkshire coast for a holiday in June. I just meant that we weren't going to be abroad. We'll mention it to the oncologist when we see him in April, so we'll see what he says. Thanks.

If you do manage to take the injection with you in June when it could well be hot, you should ensure that it is kept below any temperature limit the manufactures have recommended.

My local GP administers my 3 monthly Decapeptyl injection which I get from the local chemist. It's actually not that difficult to self inject, the instructions are pretty clear that come with the box. My urologist said that a few days either way doesn't make much difference, however my Oncolgist says that it should be injected exactly every 12 weeks not 3 monthly,

If you can get a hold of the drug I would have thought the nurse in the local doctors practice could give the injection. It's a two part drug which has to be throughly mixed before injecting. I switched from Prostap to Decapeptyl 18 months ago so I've had quite a few injections.

Good Morning

If travelling within UK it may then be an option to take the injection with you.

It will need oraganising before hand as you don't want the stress of this matter taking over the holiday - as these things can easily do!

Good luck

Hi Lynne it was the specialist nurse on here that told me it would be ok , I had checked before I booked the holiday., she told me 10 days either side would be ok, tony is having it early as it would have been due on 26th april and we are going on the 21st. the nurse practioner at our drs said it  was ok as well.
