Hi my husband has just had robotic surgery to remove his prostrate and surrounding tissue. He had his stomach drain removed2 days ago and since then a clear liquid is running from the wound. When it dries on the pad it is a yellowy colour with no smell. Is this normal if so how long will it last. We weren't told this so abit unsure what to do.

Hi Billy. This sound like what my husband had. He had an infection/Seroma ?in the umbilical wound. He contacted the ward on the number he was given at hospital and they advised him to contact the GP.

He was given antibiotics that did not seem to clear it ( although after swabs were taken no infection was present it still kept leaking for about another 5-6 weeks)

He saw the GP again who sent him back to the hospital the same day for a surgical registrar to take a look.

He had a look and sent him for an ultrasound which showed a collection of fluid under the skin. We now believe this to be a Seroma which is a bit like a fluid filled cyst that keeps draining then refilling. They do go away on their own eventually but can take weeks or even months. Doctors are reluctant to surgically drain them because they do normally resolve on their own.

They seem to be a reaction from the body's defences in reaction to the damage done to the tissues during surgery.

We just kept cleaning it with cooled boiled salted water and using sterile dressings with a no touch approach in the meantime.

I would advise you to contact your hospital. They should have given you a contact number for any post op problems.Failing that contact you GP especially if he develops any signs of redness in the area or blood/pus in the fluid as he may then have an infection.

Let us know how you get on.

Ann

Billy

I had a small amount of blood and gunge leak from the drain for a couple of days.I would ring the ward you were discharged from and ask there advice. If you have been put under the care of the district nurse you could try them. If neither of these work I would try your GP. Does he have a temperature, As always if in doubt get checked by the specialists ?

Thanks Chris
