Brachytherapy v RP v RT v HIFU

I was diagnosed at 59 in July last year after MRI and template biopsy taking 32 cores with T1/M0/N0 Gleason 4+3=7 and Gleason 3+3= 6. Given options of Prostatectomy in September 2017 by surgeon or Radiotherapy in October 2017 at the local Norfolk and Norwich hospital. Asked if other alternatives available they would refer me for HIFU at UCLH to talk to Mr A, a consultant there. I was advised that HIFU has a 78% success rate with 1 in 5 requiring further treatment within five years. I asked what other alternatives available. With a good surgeon, they could reduce the risk of incontinence but no guarantees. I had been told the risk was as high as 20 - 30%. I was told about brachytherapy which had a good balance of low incontinence with good success rates for my cancer in Jan 2018. Had the procedure at Addenbrookes by Mr K two weeks ago on the 20th March 2018. Had a water retention problem so a catheter was used for a week.

Hi Reggie,

Welcome to the Brachy club,I had Brachytherapy 19 months ago with a PSA 2.19 Gleason 3+4=7, down to 0.44 in  January 2018.

I had some urgency for the first few months and used tamulosin to help stopping it in April 2017 but still keep some in stock.I had the choice of Robotic surgery but after talking to the Brachytherapy specialist decided to take that option but only time will tell if i made the right decision.

I found the members on this site very helpful in my Journey and still like to give a little input where i can.

Good Luck John.

At the post-procedure check-up, 5 weeks later the PSA level came down from 21 to 5.12. I'm pleased with the reduction.
