Not a worrier!

I am a 56 year old who after my Dad died of prostate cancer eighteen months ago(age 85) decided I should really get a PSA check so I did. It came back as 8.3 so I have very quickly been on the roller coaster of the two week wait etc in Guildford Surrey health authority. All on time and very professionally dealt with.

I have had an MRI and a template biopsy last week. The consultant on the DRE said he thought my prostate was enlarged and slightly firm on the right hand side. Pre the biopsy he said that the MRI showed a tiny patch on the right, his words, 'That is not the same as the rest of the prostate." So I get the results of the biopsy next week. I am dealing with it all okay as I am not by nature a worrier(then why are you on here I hear you ask!)...The biopsy hit me harder than I thought though quite a lot of pain and discomfort down below and massive bruising from my anus up the inner thighs and every colour of the rainbow up through the middle of the testacles and halfway up my penis. Heyho that's what cushions are for.

Having read a lot on this site one question I do have which has not for me been properly answered is this. When I had the PSA blood test my GP did all the other well man tests at the same time, cholesterol, diabetes etc etc. She told me that as well as the raised PSA the bloods showed that I have an underactive thyroid. She was very much of the opinion get the PSA sorted out and then we'll look at the underactive thyroid thing. When I mentioned this to the Urologist he was very much of the same opinion. Does anyone else have any experience of this and is it possible that the two things hormonally are in any way linked.... I have had a few periods of extreme tiredness over the last year or so as well as aches and pains in my hands etc which I had put down to getting older but which could be symptoms of underactive thyroid......Thanks for your time on this brilliant site and I'll keep you posted when I get my results next week..

Hi Topgunnersgt,

Sorry you join us due to your circumstances which have yet to be fully evaluated. Good that you are not over-worried about all this because many men are, although doing so does not change what they have to come to terms with. At present it has not been confirmed that you have PCa and even if you do it could in need be effectively treated radically or may be so early that it could just be monitored.

We join this forum for mutual support, to learn from the experiences of others and to provide information that we have come by that may prove helpful to others.

Sorry I can't help with your query about the under active thyroid. If none of the other members can help you with this one you could contact the specialist nurses on this site for an opinion, although I would have thought your GP would be well placed to offer guidance.

It may be premature in your case but we often suggest to new members that they download or obtain a copy of the 'Toolkit' from the publications section of this charity. It provides very good basic information about PCa and various treatments.
