Night-time trips to the toilet

My husband was diagnosed just before Christmas last year.  He is on Decapeptyl injections every three months - Gleason Score 9, MRI and Bone Scan clear, so far.  His initial PSA tests were below 1, but have risen slightly, last PSA result was 5.  His next injection is due in September and we see the oncologist again in October, when we will be able to discuss the PSA rise.

He has had some bad nights recently, having to get up to go the toilet upwards of 4 times a night.  When he goes, his bladder is always full, so he really needs to go.

I'd be interested in your thoughts.  Should he speak to his GP or specialist nurse about this?

This is going to sound really obvious Genevieve and I don't mean to sound dismissive, but due to the weather is he perhaps drinking far more than he normally would.

A bladder can only hold so much so if there is a really big increase then it has to come out sometime.

If the bladder is full and goes with the urgent need then it doesn't sound like infection or irritation, just the need to empty it.

Hopefully somebody with this kind pf experience will help you

Thanks for your reply. Yes, he is drinking more water at the moment, but he did have a similar problem last month when he was drinking less. Then it seemed to improve and now it's back again. It doesn't seem to be affecting him, apart from breaking his sleep, but, of course, I wondered if it was connected to the cancer. Anyway, I'll see how we go. Thanks again.

I'm Gleason 9 and night time frequency is very common for me. I wouldn't say the bladder is ever near being full. How could it be unless you are taking on fluids during the night? I was PSA 18 and before treatment the flow was particularly low and sometimes painful - this was put down to a UTI once. I finished radiotherapy 6-7 weeks ago but so far "Nocturia" still prevalent.

Good luck!

Richard.

With me from diagnosis through RT 4 times a night would be a good night, I was going typically 8-10 times then. It has slowly improved since RT in early 2016 and now 1-2 trips, I don't think it will get better than that as I have never slept right through. So don't worry, this is normal with our problem.

Trying to keep hydrated during this hot weather but seem to be failing as I easily dehydrate - meaning all those extra cold drinks I have come out in sweat rather than down the loo.

Thank you Richard and Dave. I suppose we're still on a learning curve with this whole experience, so I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I found your posts very reassuring.
