What happens next, Hormone therapy

User

Hi, I was diagnosed with pc about 3 years ago and had 37 days of radio therapy. I have been receiving hormone therapy by injection every 3 months.

The side effects have been hot flushes, spare tyre and erectile dysfunction. The hormone therapy finishes later this year

and I am asking, if anyone else has been in my position, what happens next? My PSA has dropped to less that 0.1 so

I am hopeful. Will things get back to normal? I have not been given a gleason score.

Hi Terrylil,
once your last hormone injection has been administered, your body should eventually start to produce testosterone again and some if not all of the side effects should get easier or disappear completely. The spare tyre might need some effort and for some men the hot flushes are a permanent problem but your libido should return (whether or not you will still have ED depends a bit on what work you have done on penile health in the 3 years).

Your PSA will start to rise over time but as long as it stays under or around 2.0 your treatment will be considered a success.

Hi Terrylil

I had my last HT Prostap injection on Monday this week after 18 months of it.

I also had RT a year ago.

My Oncologist has said that treatment will recommence when and if PSA hits 5.

Next PSA tests are scheduled for June and October and I might fit a private test in before June.

I shall be watching it like a hawk and I reckon   that I will be pretty nervous later this year.

Hi Terrylil

You're asking a question that all of us on HT will ask at some point in their treatment.

You don't say whether your PC is confined to the prostate, locally advanced or advanced with mets. Has your Onco indicated how frequent your PSA tests will be when the HT stops? Some on here have tests every 3 or 6 months depending where they live.

Have they recommended Cialis or Viagra for the ED once the HT starts wearing off?

Yes. Men without a prostate should have a PSA of no more than 0.2

Hi Terrylil, i am unable to read all the text in your post.

Have you had radiotherapy along with the HT?

What was your intial diagnosis,  Gleason score etc.?

Best wishes.

Thanks,

My cancer is confined to my prostate. I have tried all the treatments, Viagra, injections and pump,

without much success. I am using the pump, however, to keep my penis healthy. I shall try again once the HT stops.

Does that measure of 2.0 apply only to men with a prostate ?
