HT and dementia

It’s 4.37am.  Just back from taking the dogs for a walk.  I’m convinced that bicalutimide is wreaking havoc with my sleep.

I’ve just read a news article that hormone therapy has been found to have a link to an increased risk of dementia.  Does anyone know Anthony about this?  As a young man (49), the last thing I wanted to read this morning was that I am at increased risk of dementia because of cancer treatment.

i certainly do think bicalutimide has caused me a lack of clarity in decision making and some forgetfulness.  It’s an unpleasant treatment which I look forward to stopping in August.

I find my sleep is still disrupted a few months after stopping HT.

There are some men who are on very long term HT who seem to cope remarkably well.

I'm not sure about the overall picture though.

This article studied cognitive function for under 70 years old with or without ADT and also the same for over 70s.

None of these treatments are without issues. It’s a balancing act.

That’s a very early start, hope you get a rest during the day.

Unfortunately, just about all medications have a risk of side effects. One of the stated risks of a tablet I take for a non PCa problem is of dementia. I think if you read the notes about prescriptions about the risks you could cause yourself anxiety.

Since HT (15yrs) I've had 1 full nights sleep. The average is up circa 4 times a night but many periods of plus 10 and beyond. My memory and focus certainly suffered on HT but recovered afterwards thus I didn't think poor sleep had any effect but? However these past years poor memory and dementia concerns have been increasing.

The better news: although I keep fit walking I've just started week 4 of the C25K course. Getting fitter has so far shown a surprising increase in memory and focus so perhaps stopping/delaying any dementia?

A couple of us have PCa consultants who've said exercise is better than any drugs available. Mine pushes it very hard with his patients. Fortunately, I exercise a lot anyway.

On the subject of drug side effects, I once bailed out of using a prescribed ear and nose steroid, having read the possible side effects, which included "eye ball may burst".

For all my current drugs, I check the possible side effects and monitor for them. HT has a long list which I've posted here before. Things like Tamoxifen which is known to cause liver problems in some people, I checked for, and found I was one of those people, and changed to dosing according to symptoms (which actually showed I could drop it altogether for now).
