Newly diagnosed - Abiraterone and ADT

I’ve just been diagnosed with advanced stage 4 prostate cancer which has spread to my spine - bony mets in 9 vertebrae. Aged 61 but otherwise in good health. My PSA was 39.

My Consultant has recommended Abiraterone (2x500mg daily) together with ADT injections (Prostap) monthly simultaneously. I understand this is a relatively new treatment and wondered if any one else has any experience ? Not sure why I’m not being offered Chemotherapy as most on these forums seem to be having it. As you can imagine, pretty scared and confused so any help / experiences gratefully received.

Early ABI has shown some significant benefits in ongoing trials. I would be inclined to ask if chemo would add further value as that to has shown significant benefit.

Thanks, would be grateful for any response from anyone who has had early Abiraterone and ADT treatment.

A good friend of ours has just been offered this today as part of a trial at Pinderfields but he is only a T2/3 so it seems a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut. With a T4, I can't think of any reason for you not to snap their hand off!

Here is a report of the original trial in 2017 - https://prostatecanceruk.org/about-us/news-and-views/2017/6/new-stampede-trial-results-show-earlier-abiraterone-could-improve-survival-of-men-with-advanced-prostate-cancer?_ga=2.162900092.1908289016.1565037770-806975822.1558385268

Research suggests that early ABI is currently the best option. Hope all goes well with it. If possible I’d appreciate it if you could contact me by private message.

I started on Abi, triptorelin and prednisolone steroids 14 months ago. Have a read of my profile if you will. Psa currently 0.34 and still working 5 days a week.

I’ve been on Prostap and Abi since diagnosis in May 2017 (PSA 129, Gleason 5+4 with mets throughout my skeleton, aged 60). I’ve had all the usual side effects incl issues re liver function that resulted in reduced doseage of Abi. I’m actually staggered that men are still forced to have chemo when Abi seems to be so effective
