Blood in urine after Prostatectomy

User

Good Morning

Could I ask, as anyone had experience of blood and ‘bits’ in urine?

I had a robotic laparoscopic Prostatectomy on August 20th, just over 2 weeks ago. Catheter came out on Wednesday of last week. I first saw blood on Monday, and it’s still happening today (Thursday), not all the time, but often when I start going. It freaks me out a bit.

My Hospital Urology Dept are excellent and I emailed them on Monday. The Nurse there told me that it isn’t unusual to see blood following surgery. I have mailed again today.

Is this a common experience and if so, how long can it go on?

Aside from this, I feel very fortunate as I’m feeling ok. I’m taking things very easy. I know it’s early days.

Thank you in advance. I would appreciate any advice, and I hope that everyone here is doing well.

Dave.

Hi Bass

I had my robotic surgery on 8th August.

I noticed intermittent bloody urine for first 3-4 weeks then started noticing almost small clot like debris.

I was reassured all was normal and the passing tiny debris - also called scabs will continue apparently for 6 weeks or so.

As long as no lumpy clots, difficulty in passing urine don't panic.

Perfectly normal - if it goes on for more than 6 weeks, mention it at your post-op consultation with the surgeon.

Hi Bass1966,

I had blood and bits in my urine for about three weeks post op and eventually I stopped noticing it, it kinda freaked me out for a bit but my CNS said it is normal and can last up to 6 weeks.

Hope that helps

Hi Dave,

If you look at your external scars they will be healing like your innards.

Expect to pass some lumpy dark blood clots for some time on occasion. In your situation dark blood = good, fresh red blood; not so much.

Best of luck.

Cheers, John.

I’ve been very reassured by the replies I’ve received.

Many thanks to you.

Thanks for your reply John.

The nurse at my Oncology clinic emailed me back and told me that it’s very usual to see blood and debris following this procedure. She’s offered to review me in clinic next week if I’m still worried after the weekend.

Like any of us, this is all new to me and you don’t know what you don’t know. I’m very grateful for this forum and the advice I’m given.

All the best to you

Dave.

Hi Dave

I am now 14 weeks post op, I had blood and bits in my urine for around 5 weeks. During that time I had three bladder flush outs, (didn’t feel a thing) due to small blockages in the urethra, they were all cleared by the specialist nurses. I am completely dry and most discomfort has gone. Like us all if we see blood where we don’t normally see it, it can be a bit of a shock. As the others said no worries really unless it goes on for too long.

Get well soon and take it easy

Regards

Peter

Thanks for all the info. I’m just over 2 weeks post op and today is first day I’ve had (fresh)  blood in my urine. Glad to read the comments which made me more comfortable. Thanks
