Hi wizzUk,

Sorry to hear you've joined our club. I don't know how far you have got with the diagnosis, tests. I see you are T2, when you know your psa and gleason score it's worth putting them in your profile.

I don't know much about the herbal stuff. Lots of modern medicines are derived from herbal remedies, and I suspect we lost a lot of herbal/medical knowledge in the middle ages when we started burning witches at the stake.

I seem to remember reading saw palmetto reduces psa, but that always appeared a fools errand to me, reducing psa doesn't cure cancer it just hides a symptom.

I have hot flushes due to hormone therapy. I think evening primrose oil is helping me with these.

I have studied scientific literature on radiotherapy, apparently it works by increasing oxygen free radicals, which are destructive to all cells, but more destructive to cancer cells than normal cells. I use this knowledge as an excuse not to eat beetroot as it is an anti-oxydent, however the same argument doesn't stop me drinking red wine; I've always hated beetroot, and I've always loved red wine.

I think on balance I would, take the drugs pushed by the doctors; rather than taking a chance on herbal treatment. And I would definitely look into interactions between drugs and herbs in case one stops the other working.

Keep us informed about your forthcoming prostecromy.

I do not believe that there are any 'herbal remedies' that can cure any form of cancer. I understand why people are attracted to them - quick, simple, painless - but cancer is cancer, and must be faced. The treatment routes for prostate cancer are well established, and any man who has it would be a fool to ignore them in favour of a 'herbal remedy'. The treatment routes may not be pleasant, but they are also not that bad, and are certainly much preferable to the alternative, which is likely to be death. I am sure Prostate Cancer UK or Macmillan can put you in touch with people who have undergone prostate surgery, or hormone therapy / radio therapy. They will be able to talk you through it in detail, and answer your questions. Prostate Cancer UK has excellent specialist nurses at the end of the phone who will also answer any questions you may have. Prostate cancer may be scary when you are first diagnosed, but can be treated. Don't let it get the better of you.

Hi wizz.

I checked your profile before I posted and can see your waiting for a prostectomy date. I think some posters here may be assuming you are shunning modern medicine, clearly this is not the case.

Using complimentary medicine as well as modern medicine is fine, with the proviso of checking for interactions.

My fiancée has heart disease, she has reiki sessions, from a logicical point of view it makes no sense to me, as a talking therapy it is fine.

This website should help.
