Worried Wifey and Feeling Overwhelmed

My 59yr hubby old went to see Gp 3wks ago due to increased nocturia and frequency. He had PSA checked. Before he had even received results he got a phone call from hospital offering him a cancellation with a Urologist. This frightened the life out of us both 😳😳

Turns out his PSA was 12.6. He has since saw the Consultant who confirmed an abnormal DRE and he has a TRUS next week, can’t get an MRI because of COVID situation.  Consultant rechecked PSA, now 12.3.

We are expecting the worst and I am worried that he’s missed out on MRI.  He also had sciatica last year and attended physio and I am ill with worry (un-beknown to hubby) that it is sinister.

Feeling overwhelmed but trying to put on a brave front for hubby 😥 I’ve been reading the forum but decided to join.

If the DRE was abnormal, then the lack of an MRI is not the end of the world because they know where they need to take the biopsies from. If any cancer is found in the biopsies, I imagine they would still try to get a bone scan before deciding on what treatment options to offer but in the current crisis, men who would have had surgery are not getting it and it may be that they just start putting all newly diagnosed men onto hormone treatment for the time being to keep the cancer under control.

The sciatica is probably unrelated - if it had been bone mets, the physio probably wouldn't have helped and he would still be in pain now.

I had a biopsy before the scan.  It was standard until a couple of years ago.

It took a couple of weeks to get the result.  Then I got both an MRI and a Bone Scan within a week.

I got an intense hip pain during diagnosis. The nurse said everyone worries about every pain when it's usually nothing to do with the illness.  Mine turned out to be arthritis.

I'm not sure how Corona effects Radiology, although there was nurse who told me what I could wear in the scanner.

Download the Prostate Cancer Tool Kit, or order a hard copy free of charge -

It will answer most of your questions. Also, don't panic too much. PSA of 12.3 is elevated, but not very. The TRUS will tell you the extent of the cancer (if any -  high PSA can be caused by other things). And if it is cancer, in the early stages, there is really no need to rush to start treatment. If you have any urgent questions, or questions not answered by the toolkit, call one of Prostate Cancer UK's specialist nurses. They are very helpful.
