Dad just diagnosed. Need advice

Great! End of the year for another PSA. I think a slow increase is to be expected. Some people go onto yearly PSA. I wonder how they decide on when the frequency changes. Dave, i think is on yearly.. or was it 6 months. I remember someone went to yearly.  Dads is coming up in September. Our surgery as a massive backlog with bloods so i am going to call to get an appointment in the diary as soon as we hit July!

Really pleased Bob. Great result.

Hi, yes last appointment was Jan 22 and next is Jan 23. The July 21 result was the first PSA after the HT had left my system it is 0.2 and the Jan 22 result was 0.1 so an even better result.

As our meetings are always brief, as I have very few problems, she (and I) don't see much point in wasting our time with meetings. However if I have any problems I can just call them and arrange an appointment.

She has told me to arrange a PSA test at six months (July) and contact them if there is a problem.

If I had a history of problems or if she were worried that I wouldn't speak up them, I guess I would have had a six month review.

I'm glad your dad is doing ok and nothing exciting is happening. I never want to be someone an oncologist is interested in.

Dave

Thanks - Yes, the GP Surgery's are steadily falling apart - this was the first time, I had to go to hospital, to get the sample of blood taken - up to now, this was always done at the Surgery - but at least they do monitor you.
The NHS is an odd creature, good in parts - useless in others.

Thanks Dave. Makes sense. I did wonder why some people are yearly and some 6 monthly. 6 month's come around too quickly, PSA anxiety every 6 months (for me anyway, dont think dad even thinks about it!).

Glad all is well your end.

Totally agree Bob.. our GP surgery have a 1 month waiting list for bloods. They are good with dad though so hopefully wont be an issue getting one booked.

Sun is out today!

Hello!

Hope everyone is keeping well and haven't melted in this crazy hot weather! Extremely humid today as well.

Dads PSA result is in.. same as last time 0.02. Really pleased about it. Oncology appointment on 13th September. I assume they will say nothing to worry and to do another PSA in 6 months.

Dad is OK apart from really suffering from hot flushes in this heat. He is really moaning about it, i think it does really bother him. He has had 2 reflexology sessions in hope that it will help, yet to see a result!

Hopefully the humidity levels will die down soon so he and others can be more comfortable.

Take care.

Thank you Lyn. I get PSA anxiety whilst he is really laid-back about it all! One less thing to worry about until the next time! Hope all is well with you.

Had my 6 monthly today - 0.37 , (0.33 last time.)

Also had a GP Mot blood test - most things not bad, but my Tryglycerides are too high !

Hope your old chap is OK.

Great PSA result Bob! So no further action until another 6 months?

Ah, Xmas won't help with lowering high Tryglycerides! You can work on it in the new year!

Dad is doing well thank you. He has started volunteering work at a charity shop. He is loving it! Next PSA is in March.

Hope everything else is okay with you.

Yes, things not too bad, thanks - I'm going to cut down on Beef a bit, that & other red meats are not good it seems.

I've an appointment at the Surgery on Tues, hopefully - no lectures ! It's a Nurse, cannot get near a Doctor !

I've never smoked & only occasional, alcohol (Cider with Sheila) so I'm probably not too bad for a 74 year old.

There seem to be a lot of overweight youngsters on invalid scooters (or wheelchairs) these days. Not good.

Hopefully, Dad works in a Cancer Research shop! - I often have a look round them myself, but finding something useful - takes quite a lot of walking, but that's all good exercise.

Hello Bob! Hope all is well? I never got a notification that i had a message here from you. How odd! How did nurse appointment go? Hopefully no lecture! Dad works for British Heart Foundation! He also volunteers for Age UK as well lol! I may get him into Cancer research too.. why not!

Dad's PSA is on 13th Feb. Fingers crossed all will be OK. He is off on holidays after that for 2 weeks. He turned 80 in Dec! Just super active.

Will update with results. Take care.

Hello all,

Hope everyone is keeping well. Dad's PSA result remained the same as last time, 0.02. So pleased about it! Oncology appointment in 3 weeks time, presume they will keep him on 6 monthly checks.

He is off on holiday for 2 weeks from next week! Nice not to have this to worry about.

Thanks again to everyone for the support and knowledge. Don't know where we would be without this community. Its been a god send.

Thank you so much Dave and Lyn. Yes 2.5 years ago. I was thinking exactly the same today. We were so worried and stressed. Had so many sleepless nights waiting for the staging etc. I remember reading this community for hours on end and making so many notes. Knowledge is power! I was just saying to dad today how much we learnt. The GP saying Zoladex needed to be taken every 3 months. Then Lyn said its every 12 weeks so i was straight on the phone to the GP lol! I believe all these things have really helped as i followed the advice to the T. We have so much to thank this community for.

Dave, you are doing so well too and il always remember your positiveness! Lets hope low PSA continues for everyone!

I am soo glad i made that first post...

Yes - I think we all appreciated this forum when in treatment, & I for one, try to help others - post treatment. I think we can all help one another, especially those at the start of treatments, when difficult choices are to be made.
