Postponed biopsy, still waiting

My husband was diagnosed by our GP at the start of August. His PSA level was 485 and the examination confirmed an enlarged lumpy prostate. A month later, following a telephone consultation, he started on hormone tablets. He then had a bone scan, which didn’t show any spread into the bones. About 3 weeks ago he had an MRI scan. We haven’t received any results from this, nor spoken to anyone since the telephone consultation. On Sunday he went for a biopsy, but the consultant then decided that it would be better to administer a general anaesthetic and sent him home. The hospital inform us that it is like to be January before he can have the biopsy. Should we be worried by this delay? 
Update: we are still waiting and have been told that there are still no slots available until at least April.

Frustrating for you and not particularly good patient care but it won’t put him at any increased risk because the hormone treatment will be starving the cancer and preventing it from multiplying. However, when the biopsy is eventually done, it will be important that the lab is aware that he is already on HT as it can affect the biopsy results.

Has he been given the name of a clinical nurse specialist / urology nurse? If so, worth a call to him / her to see whether the biopsy can be brought forward.

Jakki, he needs the biopsy to determine the Gleason grade.

If I were you I would be in touch with the Consultant’s secretary or the hospital PALS (complaints) department to see if the biopsy can be expedited. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Thank you for your reassurance, Lyn. No, absolutely nothing. No conversation with anyone since the end of August, and just one letter since then, reporting the results of the bone scan and telling him that he would need the MRI scan and the biopsy. I have read about Gleason scores, but he hasn’t even had that.
