I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer (Gleason 7(4+3)) a few days before Christmas 2020 and had my Prostate removed on 4/2/21

My Catheter was removed 5 weeks ago and I have post operation issues that I want to find out if anyone else has had.

1/. My pubic mound area is very puffy (swollen) and is very tender to touch.

2/. Both sides of my groin are numb.

3/. My Testicles and sac are very tender especially the left one.

4/. I get stabbing pains in my groin and lower belly as well as in my rectum.

5/. I still suffer from bad constipation.

6/. Obviously I have Ed and my penis is very tender especially at the base.

I am doing my PB exercises and am dry at night with just leakage when I am walking or moving around during the day.

I am due for my first check-up in a week

I don't know if these are normal problems so If anyone has any information I would be very grateful

Hi,

Glad you got your operation in a reasonable time.   It's over 4yrs since my op but I don't recall having any pains that concerned me.  Although there were twinges and from time to time I get what seems like sciatic nerve intense pain just for a flash.

Your swelling and numbness and scattered stabbing pains might be expected to a degree although it does sound  like you have them more than would be expected.   That said, things happen as part of the healing and then go away and whether to wait until an appointment can be a testing question.

I once had a full depth skin graft that looked like it was falling off and after a week of watching and it going a bit black on the edges I rang the hospital and a nurse had a look and said it should be OK.  It was.

I wonder if you should stop doing the exercises to see if it eases.  It could be something else you're doing that's upsetting it.  There's been a lot of work under the bonnet trying to heal.   Presumably your wounds are fine, they were a bit touchy about what I did.

As for constipation, is your diet gut friendly, bran, wholemeal bread etc.  Are you drinking enough.  As long as you aren't straining, that would upset the wounds.

A week to wait might be OK it's hard to tell.   Take it easy and perhaps ring the surgeons secretary, Macmillan nurse if you have one, or you could ring a Prostate Cancer UK nurse, they're helpful.

All the best, Peter

Was your prostatectomy robotic or open surgery?

Cheers, John.

Hi Geoffrey,

Negative to 1 to 5. Nothing approaching your symptoms. Apart from heavy lifting and digging the garden I was practically back  to 'normal' .

I had had severe constipation, however cleared by 1 week at same time catheter removed.

Option 6. Yes ED for about 3 years.. lol.  but no pain or tenderness as you describe.

I assume you have no fever, eating fine and walking a few miles a day ? Obviously a lot of collateral damage.  Are the wounds all healed ok ?

Regards Gordon

1 & 6 could be lymphodema - did they remove a  sample of the lymph nodes near the prostate? Or it could just still be swelling from the op.

2 is quite common - a lot of nerves have been cut, burnt and / or stitched back together. I think it was CJ who was still numb in certain areas 18 months post-op.

4 is probably the same issue as 2 - the nerve endings are jangling as they heal. It is also possible that you are overdoing things.

3 - you have had a vasectomy as part of your op - there is bound to be some pain & discomfort. But it could also be linked to odema and / or nerves being cut & jangling as they heal as above.

5 - you need to ask the GP or pharmacist for something stronger.

Hi,
Welcome to the club no-one wanted to join!😋

I had blue bruises just appearing after about 6 weeks, and stretched groin and aches all over the “Netherlands” following the op. Walking helps sort things out but take it easy.

You are in a head down position during the OP and poked and prodded with an ultrasound probe jammed up your backside; that’s quite a lot to recover from. Your symptoms sound like mine five weeks in; your body is still finding its new normal.

Keep doing the pelvic floor exercises, and think about how you stand up to avoid leakage, the cut off nerves as Lyn says will take time. I am 11 1/2 weeks post OP and I still have twinges.

Although tea and coffee make you wee, if you have a lot of fluid then that’s better than taking drugs from the doc?

The constipation can also be stress, if you can a few beers and a good curry may help?😀

Had my prostatectomy 3 weeks ago and think I'm doing pretty well considering the amount of invasive surgery that I've had. I expect it to take quite a long time to recuperate, and of course some things will have changed forever, so there is always a mental re-adjustment too.

If you are looking for answers to specific physical issues, your cancer nurse specialists should be your first port of call, followed by Prostate Cancer UK nurses. People on this site are very understanding and helpful, but you must seek professional advice if you have any urgency of problems.

As for the constipation, you are probably taking painkillers and certain types cause this as a side effect. Look for painkillers which do not have this side effect, or cut down on them, or supplement them with gentle laxatives. But again, seek professional advice if it really is a big issue.

I had mine removed with robot assistance on March2nd of this year and am now 3 weeks post op. I have all the symptoms you describe and was told at my 2 week checkup that it is all normal. I alternate 2 over the counter pain meds for buttock pain which keeps it bearable. The Doc says a lot went on in there so it will take time to heal. He said I should notice some relief at the 4-5 week point. Hope this helps......Peter.
