Two prostate surgeons of my acquaintance, one being my own surgeon, Professor Whocannotbenamedhere, were discussing two difficult prostatectomies this week after EBRT had failed and recurrence occurred.
These are considered ‘basket cases’, that very few surgeons are prepared to take on. Both were ultimately successful, but both surgeons complained of the difficulty of the procedure, due to substantial scar tissue and dense periprostatic fibrosis.
They are both concerned about a new EBRT procedure, which apparently, instead of being delivered in fractions, is just be one mega-blast of the ray-gun!
Having said that, there are many prostatectomies that go on to require adjuvant or salvage radiotherapy.
