Proctitis and post-rectal bleeding

This may be of interest. I had hormone and radiotherapy ending in January 2109 and had been signed off by the specialist earlier this year, once I’d had a sigmoid endoscopy to confirm that rectal bleeding was radiation Proctitis.

I’m just back from Gloucester Royal for a few days treatment for post-rectal bleeding. My general condition hadn’t been helped by six weeks treatment for an unrelated skin condition that had left me very tired and without appetite.

I was suffering from diarrhoea mixed with blood. The PR bleeding proctitis had been caused by the prostate radiotherapy: it had basically cooked part of the bowel.

After three units of blood [the amount I’d lost in diarrhoea over quite a long time] and some other drugs they thought I was good to go. It’s good to be back home and have an uninterrupted night’s sleep! One of the few compensations for the stay in GRH was a return to institutional food. When you’ve had no appetite, chicken pie or mince and mashed potatoes and fruit pie and custard or rice pudding are just what I wanted.

So now I’m on self-administered enemas twice daily for four weeks [Sucralfate 2g/10ml], which should coat the bowel sufficiently to reduce bleeding to a minimum.

Here’s hoping!
