Clothing for post radiotherapy radiation burns

My father recovered from Prostate Cancer a few years ago and received radiotherapy as a treatment during the illness.

Since the treatment he has experienced pain across his waistline and still struggles with wearing trousers and jeans as they irritate tissue which was damaged in this area.

I am currently looking at Christmas gifts for him and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for elastic waisted trousers / jeans or other clothing that anyone with similar side effects have found help them?

Sorry to hear about your father's late onset side effect.

Has he asked to be referred back to hospital, probably dermatology, for any treatment?

As for clothes, has he thought of using braces to hold up trousers, rather than have them gripping around the waist? Just a guess - I don't know if that will be any better.

This is the first time I can recall a report that RT for PCa has affected a man in this way. If it happens at all it usually affects the nether regions around the time RT is given or to internal organs years on. I take it that Dad has had this investigated medically and it has been confirmed that it is RT damage that is causing the irritation. If you are not able to get any helpful suggestions here, you could try either contacting one of the specialist nurses on this site or Macmillan Cancer Support who may have had more experience of this situation.

It is towards the region he just feels like a solid waste band irritates it more I think. He did go to a dermatologist post treatment but the pain is derived from nerve damage and it is irreversible unfortunately. Macmillan certainly may be a good point of call, just thought I’d post in here to see if there may be someone else who had similar side effects and if they had any ideas. Thanks

My husband has a few pairs of these - soft, easy care and elastic waist with a drawstring as well so can be tightened / loosened as required.

Also, bamboo might be a good choice - people on chemo find bamboo caps less irritant than woolly hats, etc

I managed to find a beautifully soft long t-shirt that was long and thin which felt almost silky against the skin.  That could feel soothing against the skin. Also I recall my husband had some very soft sailing trousers with a loosely elasticated waist which looked nice and were comfortable and slightly quilted so warm too. - rohan make similar things.

Some people seem to like wearing jogging bottoms and you can get some that look more like trousers.

Damart make comfortable undergarments that can protect areas that can feel uncomfortable.
