RT & HT

Hi there

Had my first appointment with my oncologist today to discuss my rising PSA  which is now 0.14

They gave me a choice of just RT or RT plus HT. I chose the latter. So tomorrow I take my first tablet for 14 consecutive days, then go back to guys to have injection of  HT then finish remaining 14 tablets. After which I will have injection of HT every 12 weeks at my GP for 2 years. My radiotherapy of 33 sessions will start in roughly about 8 weeks time.

Btw had my RP July 2020. Would appreciate any feedback with anyone on similar treatment path . TIA

I went through a similar treatment course. Started HT in Aug 2018. 32 sessions of RT in Feb/Mar 2019. Finished HT in Feb 2020. All very tolerable.

Best wishes,

Chris

I should perhaps add that I asked my oncologist if I could finish HT after 18 months, and he was happy to agree. Research shows that 18 months HT is just as effective as 24 months.

Best wishes,

Chris

Recently completed 20 x 3gy RT; continuing with HT (Prostrap, 3 monthly injections, done circa 13 months now) for as long as necessary. RT observations in Bio. RT side effects have been pretty manageable to date bar the odd blip (usually caused by eating something best avoided during/immediately post RT). HT side effects have really settled down now - initially a lot of hot flushes and aches/pains, though nothing too severe....started easing off after circa 3 or 4 months for me, though usually suffer a bit for a week or so after each injection!

Good Luck!

Perhaps not surprising but maybe better than midway between the two, which makes it pretty good odds.

May I ask what your PSA reading at now?

Update.

Had my 33 sessions of RT, PSA now 0.01 have my next PSA in two weeks time. Have come off ht  after 10 months just couldn't handle the side effects! My oncologist said there is a difference of 8% on it coming back if I come off it or stay on it for the full two years . 88% it doesn't come back 80% it could. I'll take my chances.

I don't think that's an irresponsible decision. Do you mean he said 88% it won't come back with 2 years treatment as against 80% it won't come back with 10 months treatment?

The other questions is, come back when? As an example, with 18 mth treatment as against 3 years treatment, the 5 year figures look slightly better for the 3 year version until you take into account the fact that 3 years treatment means another year for recovery of testosterone, which in turn means there's only a year left for recurrence to become significant. For both 18 mth and 3 year treatment the outcomes at 10 years are the same.

Basically no HT there is an 80% of it not coming back & with 2 year course of HT 88% of it not coming back. No actual data for 10 months HT .
