The research: Consultant Urologist Krishna Narahari is designing a study looking at lymph node treatment in high-risk prostate cancer. The study will aim to answer the question ‘is removing pelvic lymph nodes better than not removing them?'
What they want from you: The researchers would like patients, their family members or carers to complete a short survey to help shape the design of a potential clinical trial looking into whether pelvic lymph node dissection is beneficial to people undergoing surgery for high risk prostate cancer. The survey takes 5 minutes to complete and closes on 8th April.
Why it’s important: It is unclear whether removal of pelvic lymph nodes (PLND- pelvic lymph node dissection) is beneficial to people undergoing surgery for high-risk prostate cancer. Possible benefits might include better chance of cancer cure and better estimation of stage of cancer. Possible side effects include higher risk of complications (blood loss, injury to nerves or blood vessels, need for further surgery), and longer operating times. About a third of patients in the UK undergo PLND during surgery for high-risk prostate cancer even though there is no good evidence to suggest it should be done.
Interested in getting involved? If you are interested in taking part complete the survey here: https://forms.office.com/r/ErUmKAGBk5 by the end of the 8th April
Best wishes
