Sharing a lived experience - befriend my father

User

I am hoping you can support me in finding a Punjabi speaking gentleman who is living with or going through prostate cancer treatment  to befriend my father.
My father got diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer eight weeks ago and will soon be undergoing chemotherapy in in addition to his ongoing hormone injections. It would be great for dad to be able to speak to someone in Punjabi about the whole experience, given they may have experienced something similar. I am aware there is Punjabi interpreting services available however having that direct dialogue with someone of a similar background makes it more real. Anyone Punjabi speaking who would be able to share their experience?

Hi Susan,

members here tend not to have direct contact with each other. Contact the PCUK nurses (phone number at the top of this web page) - PCUK has a network of trained & vetted peer mentors and can hopefully put you in touch with someone who is Punjabi-speaking.

Hi Lyn

many thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. I have spoken to two specialist nurses who suggested I put a post on this community. Unfortunately there are no Punjabi speaking mentors. I have exhausted other avenues and hope there is someone on this community who would be prepared to talk to my father.

thanks again for your response.

regards

Susan

I already saw this request elsewhere, and I have asked the support group leaders if any of them have a suitable member. This is going to be quite a challenge, as sadly, Asian men very rarely join support groups. One of the support groups I run is in an area which has a large Asian community, but we don't have a single Asian member.

Susan, just a thought, but I wonder if it would be worth contacting your nearest Sikh temple and asking if they could make an appeal to their congregation? It occurs to me that it might to easier finding someone who's been treated for prostate cancer in a population of Punjabi speakers rather than a Punjabi speaker in a population of cancer patients?

All the best,

Chris

We have had members here from India in the past - I will try to remember their names

Susan, have you not an email from prostate cancer uk to say you have a two messages in your in box? If you scroll up this page you will see an arrow at the side of the community main menu, click on the arrow and it will show your in box. I have left you two messages so I can put you in touch with the daughter of a guy who met your request.

Thanks Chris.
