Radiation Therapy after Prostectomy?

Just wondering what people's opinion are. I recently had prostate surgery (4 weeks ago), however not any meeting/feedback from the hospital who carried out the surgery. I do however have a telephone appointment with them in 2 weeks time. I also noticed I have been booked for a telephone appointment with my hospital trust oncology team a week before the appointment with UCLH. I do however do not understand what the appointment with the oncology team, unless ofcourse they know something I don't.

My question is, whether it is normal to have a follow up appointment with the oncology team before the appointment with the hospital where the surgery took place. I have also read about the protocol of routinely following up surgery with Hormone and radiation therapy without any evidence of the cancer still present.

It is normal not to have a follow up appointment until 6 - 7 weeks post-op. Gave you been reminded to get a PSA test about a week before?

No it isn't normal to have a follow up appointment with oncology but sometimes, the clinical nurse specialist sits in oncology rather than urology so it could just be an appointment with him / her. There is a trial going on which offers all men adjuvant RT post op regardless of their pathology results- it could be something like that?

If it was bad news, it would be a major cock up to give you the oncology appointment before the surgeon has had chance to break the news to you!

It is normal on diagnosis to have appointments with a Urologist and an Oncologist so they can run through the treatment options. I assume this happened in your case. It's a long shot but I'm just wondering if a follow up oncology appointment was inadvertently booked at that time. I know when I went through that process, when I met with the Oncologist I was still undecided on the treatment path. He said in that case he was going to schedule a follow up appointment in case I decided on the HT/RT path. If I then opted for the RP route I should phone up and cancel the follow up appointment. If you have not yet had your post op histology and PSA result then I think there's nothing to worry about. I had my RP back in Feb, with a subsequent positive margin and a PSA of 0.28. I've not yet been referred to an Oncologist as I'm still undergoing scans which are discussed at the MDT meeting. So very unlikely they know something you don't. Cheers Chris

As I stated in another thread, I was booked a telphone appointment by UCLH and when I asked what this was for I was told it was to discuss the results of a procedure that had not yet been arranged, yet alone taken place. On another occasion they gave me appointments for two scans in different buildings buildings at overlapping times and when I pointed this out, was told that due to the type of scans they shouldn't have been booked on the same day anyway.

LyneEyre, thanks. I guess your analysis makes perfect sense. Also, no I have not been requested to do another PSA test, I thought you had to wait 3months to do another PSA test post surgery?

Also the oncologist appointment is with my local health trust. The surgery was perfomed at UCLH which is a completely different trust. I have 2 different application to monitor my appointments.

Just an update to my post. The telephone appointment did not take place. No phone call, nothing. I spent the morning fretting and worried about the call, checking my phone if had a reception and not to be called. I waited for almost 3hrs and then decided to call outpatients appointments, then got put through to the oncology reception. The Consultant's clinic did not was cancelled, due to train strike, they forgot to call me. However, the appointment had nothing to do with my surgery and it was a follow up to see if I had the surgery.

However, still no follow up from UCLH, the week6 appointment is from the andrology dept.
