Blood in urine after trans-pireneal biopsy

User

Good Afternoon!  I had a trans-perineal biopsy last Thursday (August 11) so 8 days ago and since then I've had intermittent shows of bright red blood in my urine, usually a few drops at the start of the flow.  Nothing in the last day or so but today there was some dark brown blood mixed in the urine, which I assume is old blood.  No symptoms of feeling unwell or pain when peeing.  I was wondering if this is concerning and any advice which can be provided by members of the community will be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.

Normal. As is finding blood in your semen. Took quite a few weeks to clear up.

Semen is usually much worse for blood than urine. For first few days, semen can look like tomato ketchup, and after that, brown sauce. I've had a couple of callers on a helpline call up having not ejaculated for months after a biopsy, and their semen was black by then.

It's a good idea to get the blood out of the prostate, because if the iron from the red blood cells is left there, being magnetic (once it's gone brown), it will reduce the quality of any subsequent prostate MRI you might need.

Many thanks gaz61 for your speedy response to my post which is much appreciated and provides me with much needed re-assurance (I have suffered from anxiety for most of my life, now aged 74). Thanks again, Julian

Brown (old) blood is absolutely normal. If you carry on getting fresh (red) blood for longer than a few days I would seek advice. It can take a couple of weeks for the blood to disappear, and a couple of months until there's no blood in semen.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks Cheshire Chris - semen hasn't actually been checked as yet 😃 Cheers, Julian

I had the biopsy four days ago; pure red blood obvious every few wees.

I had this before the biopsy for a few weeks but not as bad and I was terrified the cancer was getting worse really quickly.

Having read this thread I think maybe the biopsy has enhanced  this blood this week.

Thanks.

Yes the biopsy is the cause of your present bleeding.

I assume having blood in your urine is what prompted you to get tested for prostate cancer. As you have said you have been diagnosed with advanced cancer and now started on HT. Do you know your PSA and Gleason score. They will give us a clue as to how bad this is. HT can stop prostate cancer in its tracks, the uncertainty is for how long it will stop it.

First sign was blood in semen six weeks ago; PSA is 364. Urine test at that time was clear; blood in urine appeared a week before biopsy.

one look at my MRI scan and specialist said it was advanced and wanted PETscan asap.

Got the biopsy results yesterday - T2a N0 M0, Gleason score 7 (3+4), in 5 out of 25 cores with up to 20% volume. Not as bad as feared but perhaps a bit worse than hoped for though very thankful it's been found at an early stage. Cheers, Julian

You would think that men would be warned of the high possibility of blood in urine and semen just before a biopsy if not before then. Men would at least know this was typical rather than worry if something was wrong, as they do.

Had PETscan this afternoon; results within a week.

Thank God, all went smoothly and no delays.

Terrified  of what results will be. Cannot avoid thinking the worst.

We know it’s prostate cancer but this will decide if I have a chance of cure or else waiting to die.
